Split article into two? edit

The article currently mixes passages that each assume one of two quite different uses of the term "dreamwork", without adequately distinguishing between them (or rather it still does this, see Tcassedy's 2007 comment below). Most of the lede follows the usage of Ullman et al., i.e. uses 'dreamwork' to refer to approaches to the interpretation of dreams, while most of the body of the article focuses on Freud's usage, in which the term refers to processes of the production of dreams. --Aingotno (talk) 11:11, 29 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Improvements edit

I've done a bit of editing for POV - there's still some there but it seems difficult to remove without gutting the article (which would remove far too much of the substance) or totally rewriting (which I don't think I could do well). At the moment the article is a fairly simply description of how dreamworking happens, but written in a fairly normative way(for instance "it is best if.."). It would be good to get some analysis of dreamwork's effectiveness and/or its impact on the dream interpretation world. It's not clear to me from this article how well accepted dreamwork is in the dream interpretation field, what its perceived strengths and weaknesses are and even why someone would participate (what's the point? therapy? personal growth? Will it help people with some forms of mental illness? Does participating extend life expectancy, improve perceived happiness levels, lower stress? etc.).

Also, we really need some references - surely there are some academic journal articles somewhere...-- SiobhanHansa 13:27, 23 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dreamwork is not 'interpretation' from above as in the psychological schools of Freud and others. It holds rather that while there may be a vertical source contribution for meaning, from the archetypal to the transpersonal, it is generally held that the individual's entire history contributes to meaning for them personally. This gives the work a democratic horizontal kind of framework and why it lends itself well to group work, where contributions reflect many points of view, to ultimately be arbitrated by the dreamer for the dreamer. That being said, it is also recognized that any suggestion for meaning contains projection, and this is one place that the strictly psychological and softer spiritual approaches conceptually overlap.

In a post literate society, it helps to have dreamwork facilitators who can speak to fairy tale, the Bible, and myth, and cultural memes, lest those engaged remain skating on the surface with trivial translations of their imagery and miss the richer, transformative energies of their imagic wisdom.

The basic article, while not elegantly written, seems generally right. As for academic references, there are some among Krippner's many publications and others, and lately from the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (2014), but dreamwork as practiced, while having guidelines for thoughtful and ethical practice, does not lend itself to the collection of hard data.

Will revise this, at some point. Monica R. Duncan

Other sense of "dreamwork" edit

I came to this page looking for information on the "dream-work" (die Traumwerk) described by Freud. In Freudian dream-interpretation, the "dream-work" is the name of the mental process that converts the dreamer's anxieties, thoughts, desires, etc., into a dream. It is the engine that produces the dream out of the available psychological raw materials. I kind of suspect that this sense of the term is in wider use than the one described on this page, but I'm not sure. Tcassedy 00:43, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
