We should include the origin of the Dragon Dance, even if the origin is just a legend.

I am currently reading Jia/The Family (家) by Ba Jin, and in this there is a chapter where a dragon dance is performed for the family, and they attack the dragon dancers with fire tubes that shoot hot coins at the dancers. Why was this done? Was it a common practice? If so, could someone write an entry about it for this article. How old is dragon dance?

I can't seem to find sources for the kind of dragon dances now performed in old Chinese texts, so how old exactly is dragon dance? The dragon dances in old sources are different from the modern one. If anyone has sources that can give an idea of how old it is it'll be much appreciated. I seem to vaguely remember that it isn't very old, but a source would be useful. I can't help you with the source because I cannot remember exactly where I read it, I'm looking, but I distinctly remember reading that current dragon dancing is a reasonably old practice stretching back to at least the Song Dynasty. Sir Langan (talk) 05:47, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

The current form of dragon dance I believe is relatively new. The Song Dynasty texts I have seen describe something else - it's either the fish-dragon act or dragon lantern which is not the modern form. There seem to be vague references to dragon acts that might be interpret as dance, but I'm not sure. If someone has other Song dynasty texts where they describe dragon dance I will be most interested. Also in the past dragons were merely paraded, turning into a active dance with swirling movement seems to be something quite new or it may be something regional that became popular nationwide in the modern era. How is this dragon figure not a puppet?

A link describing the dragon dance figure as a giant puppet has been removed by an editor. Please explain to me how this animated and dancing figure, controlled by puppeteers holding rods, is not a puppet? The dragon dance figure is many things, but it is also a puppet as described in the WP article Puppet#Rod puppet. Storye book (talk) 18:33, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Find a proper RS source that say the dragon is a puppet, then add it, otherwise leave it out. Ideally find a book that discuss dragon dance in detail, and the dragon is described as a puppet, and defined it as such. The Puppet article says nothing about dragon dance, or that the dragon is a rod puppet, and the giant puppet you also linked to is poorly sourced, full of dubious statements (for example, no source given that says "Chinese dragon New Year puppet is one of the best known"), seems to be a personal original research.
