Confusing date

It is stated that 25 years ago Bathory was using the guise of Jack the Ripper to kill women. But Jack the Ripper killed women in 1888 which would make the present 1913. Yet it is stated that some time later Quincey boards the Titanic which sank in 1912...a year before the events in the main part of the work.
