Origins unknown
editThe hymns origins are not known. It is incorrect to say that "Research suggests that it was composed by an African-American slave". That is mere speculation.Royalcourtier (talk) 07:49, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
- The earliest known publication of the song was in a book of SLAVE SONGS. If you can prove that it was written by someone other than a slave, then by all means, show us your reliable sources. Otherwise, it's safe to assume it was written by a slave. Rosekelleher (talk) 18:02, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
