This article is bullshit

Incoherent, POV here and there. The article on double standard should describe what a double standard is in principle, how and why a double standard can be perceived as unfair and unacceptable (all people should be treated equal); how and why it can be perceived as fair and acceptable (groups do exhibit behavior giving rise to double standards); a parallel should be drawn with stereotyping.

The sexual double standard should be addressed in a separate paragraph since most of the usage of "double standard" actually refers to its sexual variety. The arguments should be presented in NPOV manner: why people think it's wrong (unequal treatment, attempts to suppress women's sexual freedom, attack on women's lib) and the arguments why people think there is nothing wrong with it (sex is our biggest difference, evolutionary strategy of a man to get and a woman to keep, comparing apples and oranges, effort needed to get laid for a man and a woman). 69.107.51.113 20:24, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Why is it OK for one gay man to call another one fag, but not OK for a straight man (even a friendly one) to use the same term? Or for a white person to use the term white trash to refer to a member of their family, but not OK for someone outside the familyor especially race? Or even a black person to call another nigger, but fighting words when used by another race? In their acceptable uses, these words are being used by morgs. (No reference at all to the e2 user of the same name.) Morg is a word I coined from the acronym Member Of the Referenced Group. It is a pronoun that derives its context from the conversation or circumstance at hand. It is useful because we afford certain cultural rights to morgs that are forbidden to others. (See above.) It's especially handy online, where no one knows you're a dog, and you may need to explain why you can say bitch in a chat room, but others can't. Or to inform members of a conversation that their remarks or denigrations are unappreciated because they are unaware that you are, in fact, a morg. As in,

"Human #1> What a fag!"
"Human #2> err...language, please, morg here."

I found this pronoun especially handy when I moved to a school in Northern Italy and met people from other cultures that did not have the same cultural affordances. My Swedish friends were scandalized that I would refer to members of my own family as white trash. "But it's true," I explained. Still, they could not bring themselves to accept it. I still think they don't. But everyone I talk to here in America says it generally passes their safeguards of acceptable behavior.

I found myself needing the word another time at a dinner where a Norwegian girl at the dinner and I discovered through casual conversation that she had worked in my hometown, Houston, for a number of months. Naturally, I had some negative things to say about it. But she took that as some sort of strange cue to insult the place for a good half an hour. I got more and more offended as she went on, but from what I could tell she and the others at the dinner thought nothing of it. I never confronted her on it, because I couldn't really defend it. She was just doing what I was doing only moments before. Only later I realized it was because of this deep cultural collective agreement. That's not part of the deal. But maybe it's just an American thing.

...as long as we understand that everyone else may have had a different cultural background or upbringing; we don't all see the world in the same way and through the same eyes.

Another Double Standard

This is from a definition at urbandictionary.com for double standard:

[1]

This is based on the feminazi way of life.

1) a) A father sexually/physically assults his daughter at a young age. She grows up to fear men and strives to stay away from them. ACCEPTABLE

b) A mother sexually/Physically assults her son at young age. He grows up to fear men and strives to stay away from them. LABLED AS PROFILING WOMEN AS EVIL AND UNACCEPTABLE.

2) A) A group of girls sees a male walking through a mall. They think he is attractive, and make comments about his butt, abbs, or crotch and giggle loudly. ACCEPTABLE

B) A group of boys see a female walking through a mall. They think she is attractive, and make comments about her butt, abs, or breasts while laughing. LABLED AS PIGS WHO ARE ACTING INAPPROPRIATE, TREATING THE GIRL LIKE AN OVJECT

3) A) A married woman does not have a job because she feels that it is the mans place to support his family and survives on his paycheck. ACCEPTABLE

B) A married man does not have a job because he feels that it is the womans place to support her family and survives on her paycheck. LABLED AS AN ABUSIVE HUSBAND WHO TAKES ADVANTAGE OF HIS WIFE

4) a) A war in america is started, and the military decides to instate a draft. A woman who does not want to fight states her ideas, even though she does not have to worry about it. ACCEPTABLE AND SUPPORTED

b) A war in america is started, and the military decides to instate a draft. A man who does not want to fight states his ideas. VIEWED AS A DISERTER AND A TRAITOR WHO WANTS NOTHING MORE THAN TO AVOID HIS RESPONSABLITIES.

5) A) A very feminist mother takes her young daughter and her friends out for a party. Durring the celebrations, a man happens to sit at a table next to them in a restraunt. The mother tells the girls to hurry up eating and leaves in haste because she thinks the man would be a bad influence. ACCEPTABLE, LABLED A BIT OVERPROTECTIVE

b)A father takes his young son and his friends out for a party. Durring the celebrations, a woman happens to sit next to them in a restraunt. The father tells the children to hurry eating and leaves in haste because he thinks the woman will be a bad influence. VIEWED AS BEING EVIL AND TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN INCORRECT VIEWS.

6) A) A woman has been treated poorly by men often but not constantly. She can be quoted saying "Damn all men." ACCEPTABLE, PEOPLE ASK QUESTIONS LIKE, "Poor woman, what happened to her?"

B) A man has been treated poorly by women often but not constantly. He can be quoted saying "Damn all women." UNACCEPTABLE, PEOPLE ASK QUESTIONS LIKE "What did that pig do to his wife that made her react a way he did not like?"

7) A) A young group of girls have a get together at someones house, and one boy is invited. The girls spend the whole time by themselves, and do not talk to the boy because they think boys are all stupid and should not be talked to. VIEWED AS NORMAL AND ACCEPTABLE, PARENTS PROBOBLY WILL NOT ADDRESS THE INCIDENT.

B) A group of boys have a get together at someones house, and one girl is invited. The boys spend the whole time by themselves, and do not talk to the girl because they think all girls are stupid and should not be talked to. VIEWED AS NORMAL BUT UNNACCEPTABLE. THE PARENTS WILL TELL THEM IT IS NOT RIGHT TO TREAT SOMEONE LIKE THAT BECAUSE OF GENDER.

8) A) A group of girls wants to participate in an activity that a group of boys are doing, and the boys say no because girls are idiots. UNACCEPTABLE, IF ADULTS ARE AROUND THEY WILL INSTRUCT THE BOYS TO LET THE GIRLS PARTICIPATE.

B) Later, the same group of boys want to participate in an activity the same group of girls are doing. The girls say no, because boys are disgusting and moronic. ACCEPTABLE, ANY ADULTS WILL TELL THE BOYS TO LEAVE THE GIRLS ALONE, REGAURDLESS IF THEY WERE INSTRUCTED TO LET THE GIRLS JOIN EARLIER.

I believe this an excellent list of double standard. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but this is an excellent example of a double standard raging rampant throughout the country.

hm, there's nothing offensive in there. That's all the truth. All boys experience this when they're young, and if in a group of girls, they're treated as "icky" and outcasts. This is very well shown in this product line of shirts:Boys are stupid, throw rocks at them!. In this article, it even states how women supported these shirts. a horrible double-standard exists against men, but no one cares enough to do anything about it. C. Pineda 03:45, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

[new user input:LindsyLobo; obv afore statement was written by a male, who failed to mention the well known double standard existing against all females. Honestly when defining a term can it not be kept neutral without some sexual prejudice going down? I don't mean to troll the guys entry, but simply put, a double standard is - a set of principles that allows greater freedom to one person or group than to another. All the written statements above consist of double standards in of themselves.] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.174.152.155 (talk) 10:32, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Here's a perfect example of double standard. If the sexes were reversed in this story, the gym teacher would've never seen the light of day and probably would've gotten the crap beaten out of him in jail. Donmega60645 15:01, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

I deleted the message that was in this place, it was completely inappropriate, and not helpful towards a man's cause. And please don't bring it back C. Pineda 03:52, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Gender and ethnic double standards

The last two sentences of the "Gender and ethnic double standards" section are:

However, skeptics argue that the use of such reversed and gender-neutral terms remains relatively rare. quite.

The "quite" seems strange and unnecessary (it is also uncapitalized). Vandalism? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 138.243.228.52 (talk) 15:12, 13 December 2006 (UTC).

Iran not in violation of NPT

Iran is not in violation of the Non-proliferation Treaty, as suggested in the article. In fact, all Iranian nuclear facilities have been heavily scrutinized by the IAEA in compliance with NPT provisions. Please fix this.200.82.56.238 22:41, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Houston Nutt

Why is Houston Nutt mentioned in the 'See Also' section? There is no reference to him in the article, nor can I find a mention of Double Standards in his page. Draethon 02:21, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Draethon

Hey CFIF, you forgot one thing. It's "okay" for blacks to use the N-word, but it's not "okay" for whites or any other race to use the N-word. As a black person, I'm against that word's uage by all people, but it is a double standard. Double standards are stupid.Fclass 18:06, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

I would argue that it is not a double standard, because it is considered acceptable for any racial or ethnic group to use a slur to refer to itself but unacceptable for those who are not a member of that group. You might argue whether it is appropriate to do so, but since the same principle applies to all groups, I don't think it can be called a double standard. Bostoner (talk) 20:10, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Reverse Discrimination

I believe that Reverse Discrimination has a lot to do with Double Standard and should be mentioned somewhere in the article, or at least linked at the bottom.

An example would be white-on-black crime versus black-on-white crime. And a sub-example would be an incident last Halloween in Long Beach, California when 9 black people beat up 3 white girls while supposedly shouting racial slurs. One of the girls had to have several surgeries just to piece together parts of her skull. Their sentence was rather minimal and they were released recently with parole. The judge did not consider it a race crime because the two parties did not personally know each other, even though the jury was in favor of a full sentence.

Of course nowadays, most white-on-black race crimes are dealt with entirely, but in a politically correct world, Double Standard almost always applies.--Relyt22 23:32, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Unsourced POV

I'm ready to hack all of the examples currently in this article out unless they can be sourced. The individual topics can be dealt with on their respective pages (feminism, racism, etc.). This article is about the general concept of double standards, so nothing should be here beyond minimal examples to get the idea across. Torc2 (talk) 09:30, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Double principle

Such double standards are seen as unjust because they violate a basic maxim of modern legal jurisprudence: that all parties should stand equal before the law. Double standards also violate the principle of justice known as impartiality, which is based on the assumption that the same standards should be applied to all people

How are the two different? --Tgr (talk) 23:41, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Examples

I have removed the following unreferenced "examples" (read "opinions"):

  • A man who believes it is his right to have extramarital affairs, but that his wife does not have such a right holds a double standard. (A man who publicly condemns extramarital affairs while maintaining his mistress is a hypocrite.)
  • A black man playfully calling his friend "nigga" while believing that such a word is cruel and racist when used by his white neighbor, is holding a double standard. This is an especially debated double standard regarding racial issues, largely in the United States
  • A person who consider themselves to be near worthless and others to be like royalty.

and have replaced them with links to examples of double standards that are in the news. I suggest that other independent and verifiable examples might be added to the list. Andy14and16 (talk) 22:50, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Verb

Someone who acts in a hypocritical manner is a hypocrite. Acting like a hypocrite, is hypocritical.

As they are not completely the same, I think it'd be interesting to add to this article (or merge it into, since it might not be notable enough to mention on it's own) if there is a verb for acting according to a double standard, or being one who acts according to a double standard?
