Dev

edit

I noticed on the IMDB page that someone credited Ethan Tavares as portraying someone named Dev. I've only seen one episode so far and he was not in it, can anyone confirm if a character named Dev appears in any episode, and if so, which one it is? Ranze (talk) 14:56, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Source improvement

edit

@Bearcat: I'm all for finding more sources but request some clarification about the templates tagged so I can know what needs fixing first.

  1. What is an example of a source here you think may not be reliable?
  2. What is being stated by sources associated with the subject you think potentially prevents it from being neutral or verifiable?

I thought any use I made of primary sources here was done in line with WP:PSTS:

A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge.

In this case, citing them to show that these are indeed episode titles, and citing CBC to show the numbering associated with the episode title and when it aired. Ranze (talk) 13:52, 24 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

YouTube videos are never acceptable sources for Wikipedia content at all, so references #7, 10, 13, 16 and 23 are not reliable sources — and while primary sources can be used for some supplementary confirmation of stray facts after an article has already been sourced over WP:GNG by media coverage in sources that are fully independent of the topic, in this case every single source I didn't single out in the first half of this sentence is a primary source, while no independent media coverage has been cited at all. WP:NMEDIA does not confer an automatic notability freebie on every television series that exists, such that you can use exclusively primary sources to support an article about it — the majority of the article's sourcing always has to be to newspaper or magazine articles about the show in media independent of the show, and if that's not present the article remains vulnerable to deletion even if hundreds of primary source links can be added. (By the same token, you can use a writer's primary source website about herself to source biographical facts about her not mentioned in RS coverage, such as where she was born or where she went to university, after enough media coverage has already been added to the article to source her over WP:AUTHOR and/or WP:GNG — but her own website cannot in and of itself cover off whether she's notable enough to have a Wikipedia article if there's no media coverage being cited alongside it.) Bearcat (talk) 16:40, 24 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Could you clarify where it says YouTube videos are never acceptable sources? What I used them to support was the fact that CBC added the video to YouTube at the listed date, and CBC links to those videos and the playlist from the official site. It's just to supplement the data on when CBC originally broadcast it on TV since those could differ. Basically an alt date for the episode guide.

I'll keep digging for some news sources but due to the nature of the title it's a bit of a chore, I'm trying various combinations with other words associated with the show for butter results. Ranze (talk) 17:33, 25 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

YouTube is deprecated under both WP:SELFPUB and WP:USERG, as are other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. The date the CBC added the video to YouTube isn't noteworthy information that's warranted in the article anyway, so it's not a situation where we would need to grant a special dispensation to YouTube sourcing. Bearcat (talk) 17:38, 25 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources#Exceptions mentions "may be acceptable if the content was authored by, and is credited to, credentialed members of the site's editorial staff." and for those able to view them, access to the episodes which are officially made available there is a good source of info on the show. Ranze (talk) 12:34, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Where does any of the YouTube videos contain any credits to "credentialed members of the site's editorial staff"? Bearcat (talk) 17:39, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ethnic categories

edit

With 'A Song For Everyone' implying Dot's mixed heritage (singing a Jewish song with her mother and a Christian song with her father) it made me wonder whether Category:Jewish television series is appropriate or not. The category doesn't explain whether Judaism needs to be a central theme of the show or if the central character being Jewish or half-Jewish is enough to qualify it.

It also occurs to me that we don't have a place to put categories which pertain to Dot herself. Largely because there is no obvious extended surname. Given that Hal has consistently referred to her mom as "Mrs. C" and her dad as "Mr. C" calling her "Dot C" and putting categories there would seem to make sense. Ranze (talk) 15:14, 6 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

In terms of categorizing it as Jewish, what would be necessary is something in between those two extremes. It doesn't have to be a central theme of the show in the sense that every episode was specifically about her Judaism, but it also needs to be more than just an informed attribute implied by her singing a Jewish song in one episode. Think Being Erica: Erica being Jewish wasn't exactly a core theme of the series, in that religion was pretty irrelevant to a lot of episodes, but there were still more than enough episodes in which her Judaism was directly addressed as a plot point that her being Jewish was more than just a bit of trivia.
If Jewishness starts becoming a plot point more often in the future than it has, then categorizing it as a "Jewish television series" would become appropriate — but if all you've got is that she sings a Jewish song in one episode, then as of right now we still don't know enough: is she being raised Jewish because of her mom? Is she being raised Christian because of her dad? Is she being raised unreligious, and just being taught the songs solely because those are the children's songs her parents happen to know? My mom, for example, sang French songs to me as a kid and still sings French songs sometimes to her granddaughters — but we spoke English at home because dad, so in actual practice I learned most of my French the same way as most other people in Ontario: 30 minutes a day in school, the end. (I understand French well enough to extract the salient facts from a French-language source in the process of referencing an English-language article about a Quebec-related topic on en, but not nearly well enough to be an active contributor to fr.) I'm not in any meaningful way "francophone" just because my mom sang "Alouette" to me when I was five — and a similar issue would apply to the show as well: we need more information than we've got right now before we could call it substantively "Jewish". @Palettepony895: thanks for adapting the list into a table, I always find that an intimidating task to set up and hard to do when I'm making updates to the list during brief moments on a tablet that doesn't allow for easy text input. I have some new updates I'll incorporate here.

I guess the references I added establishing which titles go with which air dates or episode numbers aren't needed once it has aired so I'll just add them for ones which haven't aired yet. There's 3 new scheduled I'll do. Ranze (talk) 02:31, 16 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Weirdness today

edit

The title of the January 12 episode advertised in both my digital TV guide and on the CBC website at http://www.cbc.ca/programguide/daily/2017/01/12 (archived http://archive.is/dtjQl here) is "For Pet's Sake" (described as Eps 31 on CBC). The summary being "Dot and Hal open up a pet-sitting business for their friends, but wind up biting off more than they can chew."

I had added this on January 2nd: special:diff/757885892

This is not the episode which actually aired. I figure they mixed it up. What actually aired was "Remembering Ogopogo" about the death of Nev and Dev's Goldfish.

Since this was not listed on CBC, I don't know the official episode number, so what I will do is put it at the bottom of the table without the number and with today's date.

For that reason, while I will keep the reference supporting episode 31's title, I will be removing its date since I can't confirm it to have actually aired.

I would have similar concerns about Rosetta Bone / Scratch Speaks and Wave Goodbye / Shallow End Hal but in these two cases, in spite of the changed title, the summary for the episode did match what actually aired, so I can't confirm that the 2 titles represented different episodes, so they were probably renames and I will keep them listed as Alt Titles for now, possibly splitting later if we do later discover them to be distinct stories. Ev

edit

Although I do not recall hearing his name spoken, he has a speaking role in "Remembering Ogopogo" which just debuted today (in spite of being advertised in the TV guide as "For Pet's Sake") and I found out his name because of the end credits attributing it to voice actor Anand Rajaram.

I can't say for certain (if anyone else wants to watch in cased I missed it) but I usually keep an ear open for trigger words establishing relationships... I don't recall either referring to him as "dad" or "bro" or "uncle" or "cousin" or anything like that, so I can't be entirely certain what their relationship to him is. The similarity in name makes me think it's probably familial... his age I would assume most people are meant to think he is their dad, but until the dialogue actually establishes that I don't want to jump to any conclusions.

If anyone wants to listen in any other episodes, whether or not he appears in them, to see if dialogue can support this. Or perhaps if there is a "parent-teacher" conference he attends in the future it could serve as support for him being their father.

This reminds me... Hal's older brother appeared in the golfing episode "Hal in One"... I forget but I wrote it down somewhere... but I didn't remember to check the end credits for the voice actor... May have to wait until it reruns... regretting deleting that off the PVR now. I'll put a note. Ranze (talk) 16:01, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Maker Breaker

edit

I'm not sure if I should add this to the table. I didn't see it scheduled on my TV (only goes 2 weeks ahead) or CBC (only goes 1 week ahead) but came across http://tv-episodes.prettyfamous.com/l/7583171/Maker-Breaker which says it will air on the 31st.

I'm not sure exactly where PrettyFamous.com would get that information or how realiable it is, but I don't see why someone would make that up... I just wish I knew what reliable source announces titles that far in advance.

The site is clearly not perfect. It for example wrongly lists "For Pet's Sake" as coming out on the 12th, which is what I thought too until I actually watched it and found out that was a wrong advertisement.

It also applies the wrong episode numbers. The CBC schedule lists the official episode numbers, whereas PF just makes up the numbers based on the order they debuted in. Kids shows often debut out of order to their official numbering though (Dot. and Mike the Knight certainly do) so sites should not make assumptions like that. I suppose it might just be automated errors though.

For now I'll assume good faith and list the title / date and this as a reference, but much like Remembering Ogopogo, I can't confirm its official number since CBC hasn't listed it yet. Ranze (talk) 16:16, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Colorado

edit

@Giddyonyx: re special:diff/783060575 where did you get the idea it was set in this state? 174.92.134.39 (talk) 02:59, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

From what I can tell, it gets cold in the winter (the X-mas eps), and warm in the summer (since it seems to be when many episodes take place). Also, it has to be near a lake (Shallow End Hal), but close to a forest as well. 47.208.20.130 (talk) 02:12, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
That description equally fits a lot of places, not just Colorado — very large portions of Canada are cold in the winter, warm to hot in the summer, and near both forests and lakes too. Regardless, Wikipedia is not a place for inserting your own personal speculation about where a show might be set — we publish what reliable sources say about a show, not what one user thinks. Camping episode

edit

Does anyone recall an episode where Dot and her parents go camping? I thought I recalled Mr. C referring to it as a "Comet family vacation" but I'm not sure. I might be thinking of some other toon with "SURNAME family vacation" being used. If anyone knows the title of a camping ep here I will watch it again to check but I can't seem to figure out one. ScratchMarshall (talk) 16:29, 20 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

While not with mom and dad, Dot did do a episode with her Nana in today's episode where they did camp. 75.111.23.74 (talk) 18:23, 27 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
