Vietnam

Didn't Donald Sutherland travel to North Vietnam in the early 1970's with Tom Hayden and some others to bring home American and Canadian POW's that the NVA released into their custody? Can anyone who knows more about this write a bit on it? Thanks. -Anarcho_Hipster

According to IMDB, she named her cat Donald after Donald Sutherland. Therefore, when she was choosing a professional name, she used Sutherland. --PhantomS 23:24, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Beerfest

Donald Sutherland also played a significant role as Lucien Wilbanks in 1996's "A Time to Kill" which was directed by Joel Schumacher.

A family photo

Hi, My name is Pam Wicks, I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Recently my in laws passed away who lived in St Johns, Ontario (Fonthill). My mother in law was a good friend of Albert and Margaret Gibson. After they passed away my mother in law received most of their pictures. I found one that is "Capt. Edward Sutherland" Born in England in 1795 Died at Hillside Panch, the home of his daughter & son in law Isabel & William Milburn in the year 1885. Is buried at hillside on top of the hill over looking the ranch. Location is 14 minutes east of the town of Santa Margarita, in San Luis Phispo County, Calfornia". This is written on the back of the photo. I remember Mrs Margaret Gibson telling us she was a relative of Donald Sutherland. I have this photo and would love to get it to the family. If this message could get to Mr Sutherland and than he could advise what to do with this photo.. Thanks in advance for your help

Adding wikilinks to personal life section

To avoid the potential for edit warring, can I get some consensus if adding wikilinks to words already existing and adding specific wikilinks for a concept like "Canada's universal health care system" as I did so here are a positive contribution to the article? I'm willing to give up on adding "social democratic" as a descriptor for Sutherland's father-in-law, even though the referenced source states "and then [Sutherland] met Shirley Douglas, the daughter of Tommy Douglas, a socialist politician who was the architect of Canada's welfare state" but the rest is simply linking existing words in the section for the information of readers. @David J Johnson:, feel free to weigh in too. 70.27.185.204 (talk) 23:13, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

I have already answered on your Talk page. Frankly, your edit reads like a advertisement for Tommy Douglas on a page devoted to Donald Sutherland. Certainly we do not need to know any political party for Sutherland's father-in law, the link will tell anyone interested that. No-one wants to edit war - certainly not me, but let's stick to the subject. Why not create a proper account for yourself, rather than editing behind an anon IP ? @David J Johnson: It had nothing to do with Douglas' political party, it was describing his political beliefs with the addition to two words. Two words are hardly an "advertisement". As for staying on topic, let's: How is adding wikilinks to already existing words in the article not constructive? Per MOS:LINK it is recommended to add links to allow for "relevant connections to the subject of another article that will help readers understand the article more full". I feel that non-Canadian readers would benefit from linking the words "Canada's universal health care system" to Medicare (Canada) which describes the system and the word "father" in "'father' of [said system]" to Father of medicare given that those phrases were already existing in the article. Linking saves time for expanding the definitions of these terms in an article about Donald Sutherland, the actor. Finally, to answer your last point, I am choosing to edit from an IP because I can. Users are not required to have an account to edit Wikipedia, hence it being "The Free Encyclopedia That Anyone Can Edit". I have made many positive contributions to Wikipedia through this IP and several others, my being an unregistered user doesn't make my contributions any less valid than yours. 70.27.185.204 (talk) 00:47, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

I was in the same company as an actor with Donald Sutherland back in 1954, during the summer stock season in Gravenhurst, Muskoka (North of Toronto). As I remember, he didn't act, he painted the scenery. It's pinned in my memory as Roger Bannister ran the 4 minute mile during the season. sequence of events

Sutherland rose to fame after starring in films including [list of movies from 1967 to 1981]. He subsequently established himself as one of the most respected, prolific and versatile character actors of Canada. He later went on to star in many other films where he appeared either in leading or supporting roles such as [list of movies from 1989 to 2015].

It currently says he gained prominence for playing a character in the hunger games. Gained prominence, as in "to become important or famous". Yes, that absolutely unknown before 2012 actor Donald Sutherland. He got a star on the walk of fame 2 years before the series even came out, he absolutely did not "gain prominence" because of that movie. He was already kinda well known at that point. Just a tad.

Married or not?

A 1981 New York Times article calls Francine his longtime companion (not wife), and according to a 1995 L.A. Times article he and Francine still weren't married. In a 1999 L.A. Times article Francine is suddenly referred to as his wife, but I couldn't find any wedding announcement. It's possible this couple has never married. They certainly weren't married in 1972.
