Addition of examples?

edit

I think it would be nice for this article to include some well-known examples of domain fronting. Somerandomuser (talk) 19:07, 4 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think we can provide Meek (Tor Bridge), Snowflake (also a tor bridge) and Signal (messenger) as examples.
See https://bamsoftware.com/papers/thesis/index.html#fig:meek for the former two. WofWca (talk) 11:29, 29 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

CDNs vs Common hosts

edit

There are some problems with the article in it's current form. Language like 'communicate with an entirely different site' applies when one is using a CDN provider as a proxy through to your real back end. However if you're simply using a large web host like google app engine or S3 this is incorrect.

The trick around domain fronting is not in fact hiding a website behind a generic host, rather it's utilising the common IP block and SSL certificate presented. I'll update the article shortly. Deku-shrub (talk) 21:47, 11 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Parts of §Technical details looks unfinished...

edit

...because they are. I was rewriting it a little to describe in greater detail how the 'collateral freedom' aspect of domain fronting worked; felt that the last paragraph of §Technical details was the best place to put it. That part will be better when I (or any of the other editors) get back to it. However, it's the first paragraph of §Technical details that looks shoddy; one the last sentence there is unfinished. I was meaning to get more work done, but I won't be able to finish more things today. I'll get back to this article in two days max.

The other editors can feel free to remove the unfinished-looking parts for the time being, leave it as is, or edit it themselves. I'll come back to this in the next couple days.

On a related note, I do plan to work on §Usage in the very near future as well. Rn it's really rudimentary, I just wanted to get some of the major users out here into the article. The previous version of technical details (before I redid it to be more technical) talked about Signal and some other (I think?) deploying fronting; it had other helpful citations for this. The editors can feel free to edit §Usage in the meantime as well. —I'llbeyourbeach (talk) 20:00, 8 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

A nice and more detailed drawing of domain fronting

edit

Here it is https://bamsoftware.com/papers/thesis/index.html#fig:meek However, that drawing is specific to the Meek bridge of Tor, I think it's fine. The paper is in public domain: https://archive.org/details/fifield-thesis Confirmation: https://forum.torproject.org/t/a-draft-research-paper-about-snowflake-comments-welcome/9585/16?u=wofwca

Let me know if you agree to replace the current one, or put it in "Technical details" WofWca (talk) 08:46, 29 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
