Talk:Do It (Nelly Furtado song)

Needs expanding edit

Hmm, it seems a little strange that this article is so short, and yet there is a very comprehensive article on the plagiarism controversy surrounding the song at 2007 Timbaland plagiarism controversy. Maybe there should be a summary of that article in this one? Extraordinary Machine 22:34, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

There doesn't seem to be much more to say about this song itself, as its notability is based on the controversy. The 2007 Timbaland plagiarism controversy talks about both this song and the ringtone, and while the summary can be a bit longer, extensive duplicate content should be avoided. Has airplay (if it is played on radio, I wouldn't know) of this song been affected? Any critical reviews of the song? Pomte 23:25, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Graffiti edit

In God's Hands was just announced. Of course, Do It is uncomfirmed. Because neither Nelly nor her label has been quoted as saying this. This is graffiti, albeit, benevolent. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Insaneace1 (talkcontribs) 11:57, 27 March 2007 (UTC).Reply

I agree. Jonwood2 20:10, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Next Single? edit

Is this song going to be the next single for her album? Yellowstone County Girl 03:40, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

I'd love to know this too, it's my favourite song on the album but I can't find any sources that back the statements here up? I hope it's true though! Martyy1 11:59, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

It has begun getting radio airplay. 211.30.60.106 08:48, 7 July 2007 (UTC) ... and it was announced officially. allacess.com. 211.30.60.106 10:27, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Missy Elliot edit

Apparently Missy Elliot remixed it, and it has been leaked? 211.30.60.106 05:11, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unneeded section headers edit

Wikipedia:Guide_to_layout#Headers_and_paragraphs recommends (for good reason) against short sections, which is particularly relevant to this article, in which the paragraphs about the music video and plagiarism allegations controversy are not large enough for their own sections. Even if this wasn't the case, note that only first words and proper nouns should be capitalised in section headers; thus, "Music video", not "Music Video". Cover edit

WEll, I saw this cover, and it think its a foney because I saw it on this other website and it made by this guy thats a fan of Nelly Furtado. So I'm not sure if thats the cover? Explode24 (UTC)

I saw it too & it's definitely not the real cover. 211.30.60.106 10:21, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I agree, maybe we should delete it? You decide yes or no?

Cover again edit

The cover at the moment is this a fan-made cover or is this cover on the official cover because it looks fan made. Explode24 15:26, 17 September 2007 (UTC)(Australian time)Reply

Cover edit

People, stop putting fake covers. I am deleting it.Explode24 18:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC) (Australian time)Reply

Maybe you should stop deleting the REAL cover then. Martyy1 10:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

And how do you know that this is the real cover? Wheres your sorce saying that it is the final and proper cover for "Do It"? Explode24 20:49, 8 August 2007 (UTC) (Australian time)Reply

Try clicking on the image and following the source that is provided. Martyy1 13:54, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Already did, but it doesn't mention that its the real cover. It just advertising the song on her website. Its not the official cover. .Explode24 16:05, 9 August 2007 (UTC) (Australian time)Reply

It's still a form of identifying the song, and the official iTunes USA cover, so it should be left. As it has only been slated as a digital download in the USA and Canada at the moment, this is currently the official cover. Martyy1 06:52, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Nelly+do+it.jpg edit

Image:Nelly+do+it.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

"it was alleged" edit

Added this part to the intro as, after all, the case is still in appeals. Tooironic (talk) 21:56, 14 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

According to Janne Suni the composer of the original track the case was closed and resolved.

Dubious edit

Hi I noticed you reverted the edit of deleting your add on of claiming the songwriters or songwriter as dubious… You didn't even explain your excuse of adding it on your edit summary from January and still didn’t yesterday. You also didn’t even care to start a discussion on why you feel it’s dubious when it’s clearly sourced by coming from the albums liner notes, nor did you care to start a discussion on the albums page Loose. It’s sourced within the albums liner notes which is cited within the article. I will also be including a source coming from Nellys official YouTube channel of the song which is states all 3 (Nelly, Timbaland and Danja) are the songwriters of the song. If you still feel as if this is dubious then I would recommend opening a discussion on the articles talk page, or reply back to me. If you can’t do either of those things then I would recommend leaving it alone because it’s clearly not dubious. [1]

Thank you Pillowdelight (talk) 02:18, 21 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

As it has been revealed that Timbaland simply remixed a song by another artist and then claimed it as his own work I would say his claim of writing it is dubious. That he lied in the liner notes and a YouTube clip does not invalidate better sources. // Liftarn (talk) 05:54, 23 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
This source claims it was settled in court, no where does it state they had to be credited as songwriters on the song. So placing it as dubious isn’t necessary especially if it’s already been settled in court in 2009. [2]

Pillowdelight (talk) 11:13, 23 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

And? We should still say who the songwriter(s) actually are, not just duplicate liner notes. // Liftarn (talk) 12:57, 23 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Again, it was settled in court. Just because he got sued for plagiarizing the song doesn’t mean the songwriters of the original song need to be credited. Especially if they didn’t ask to be credited or were ruled by the court to be credited. The only way they would have to be credited is if a source claims they were to be credited. Which didn’t happen. But from the source coming from the Medium as I linked on my previous message doesn’t state anything about them having to be credited. Also this isn’t even a requirement for Wiki guidelines.

Pillowdelight (talk) 13:21, 23 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I looked at BMI Songview Search https://repertoire.bmi.com/ and it has an entry for Furtado's song "Do It". (There are a ton of songs named the same, and you have dig pretty deep before Furtado comes up.) The BMI webpage includes ASCAP songwriters, and it names all the people who have rights to song royalties, which is where the rubber hits the road with regard to who is really credited as the songwriter. The Furtado "Do It" entry lists Nelly Kim Furtado and Timothy Z. Mosley as the only two songwriters. If Nate "Danja" Hills helped in some way to write the song, Furtado and Timbaland cut him out where it counts. I can see on the CD liner notes and the AV media labels that Danja is credited as the third songwriter, so now we have a contradiction in our sources. We can try and figure out which one is correct, bringing in new evidence to sway the issue, or we can tell the reader in prose that Danja was listed as songwriter on the various AV media but not registered as co-composer with BMI/ASCAP. Binksternet (talk) 23:51, 23 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

That’s not even what we’re discussing about. But I do believe Danja should be listed as I wouldn’t even trust BMI. Plus makes no sense that he’d be listed on the liner notes, her Spotify credits on the song and YouTube credits on the song, both of which being sourced by coming from the databases of Mosley & Geffen.

Pillowdelight (talk) 07:00, 24 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Regardless of liner notes. It is a known fact that the song (apart from lyrics) is a remix (muted bassline and added drums) of the Glenn Rune Gallefoss arrangement of Janne Suni's original music. // Liftarn (talk) 09:05, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
