Merge

We currently have Djibouti City and Djibouti (city), which between them share information on the city and the region. These need to be combined into either one overall article or rescoped into one for the city itself and one for the surrounding region. The redirect at Djibouti, Djibouti also needs to be considered. Djibouti (city) → Djibouti City — In December 2006, the two articles Djibouti City and Djibouti (city) were merged by cutting and pasting with "Djibouti (city)" as the article location on the grounds that the editor rarely saw "Djibouti City" being used. Whilst this is probably true, I think we need to bear in mind that this is a country where French is more likely to be used than English and as such "Djibouti Ville" and "Ville de Djibouti" are likely to be common. I have found these terms used in a range of websites such as this presidential decree, this property company website, this tourism page, this news report on waste disposal, this election-related pamphlet, and this UNHCR document. Therefore I think this article would be better located at "Djibouti City". Green Giant (talk) 22:00, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Djibouti (city) → Djibouti City – This has been proposed before, with not much discussion previously. From what I can tell, it is common for the city to be called either "Djibouti" or "Djibouti City" in English. (We currently use "(city)" to disambiguate the article name from the country, which shares the same name and is at Djibouti.) It is difficult to conduct searches to determine which is more common, since the majority of the hits that result from "Djibouti" alone are going to be for the country. But I get 330,000+ for a Wikipedia-less search of "Djibouti City", with around 3000 in google books, 800 in google news, and 300 in google scholar – so the proposed form is not uncommon. I think using "Djibouti City" would be a more natural form and in line with articles in similar situations, such as Luxembourg City. • Oppose the proposal but am open to convincing. A Google search of "the capital of Djibouti is" -wikipedia (books) gives a variety renditions with "Djibouti City" not all that common.   • I would prefer the current parenthetical version over Djibouti city. The uncapitalized version is basically the same form of adding a non-proper noun disambiguation word in parentheses, and the usual way on WP of doing that seems to me to be adding a word in parentheses, not just tacking on an extra common noun word without parentheses. Foreign presence in Djibouti

This is an odd oversight: according to the map of the city, there are a couple of French military bases, one American, & one Japanese military base in the city around the International airport, & a related article mentions a Chinese naval base in the area -- yet not one word about any of these. While security concerns do make it difficult to find information about these, & would probably make it difficult to keep this info in the article, still I'd expect at least some mention of these facilities being in Djibouti & maybe the year they were established. It's not as if no one living there is unaware of their existence. -- llywrch (talk) 18:09, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Djibouti City → Djibouti (capital) – Djibouti is the capital of the country of Djibouti. The BBC, CIA, and Britannica all have the capital listed as Djibouti, not Djibouti City. It's not at all clear that the current title is actually problematic — we title things on Wikipedia with their common name, not necessarily their official one, and nominator hasn't provided any evidence that "Djibouti City" isn't a normal and common way of disambiguating the city from the country. But even if this were to get moved, the correct parenthetical disambiguator would be "(city)", not "(capital)". Djibouti City → ? – I previously suggested moving the current page title from Djibouti City to Djibouti (capital), but everyone opposed the move. Page Name Change to Djibouti City

In many cases on Wikipedia, an entity whose capital city is the same name as the entity itself results in the page for the capital city being labeled as 'Place'+'City'.

Notable examples are Luxembourg City, whose official name is just Luxembourg, but the suffix of 'City' was tacked on to disambiguate, and Quebec City, whose name is officially just Quebec, but the article name has been changed do differentiate.

Source for Districts

Is there any reliable source for the districts of Djibouti City? The few sources I find differ. The ones on https://maps.mapaction.org/dataset/4f18eedf-7a8b-437b-b2d3-28971adebc0d (no license :-( specified) are not the same names as on this page and differ as well in shape to the map here. The one I bought from tourist office (not free of course) might not show the official organisational names, but it is different again. Simohe (talk) 21:13, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

The German wiki (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dschibuti_(Stadt)#Stadtgliederung) mentions the city consists of 3 "communes" which consist of total 6 "arrondissement". The districts ("quartier") are mentioned as part of the "arrondissement". Unfortunately all the sources are defect weblinks. Simohe (talk) 18:12, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

Contradictory sentence?

The article states, "Djibouti has a population of around 600,000 inhabitants, which counts for 54% of the country's population." Which is it? -- Ríco 22:18, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

What is the contradiction? Would it be clearer with something like "Djibouti (city) has a population ..." or "The city has a population ..."? Or does the number not match the one mentioned on the country's page? Simohe (talk) 18:19, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
