Date of Birth

edit

It cannot possibly be correct. He was referred to constantly (and referred to himself) as being 18/19 around the time his first album came out, yet according to this he would have been 17. The article also refers to him winning an award in September 2003 aged 19. According to the DOB listed in this article, he would have been 17 then. (Unsigned)

mytowerhamlets.co.uk also lists 01/11/1985 (http://www.mytowerhamlets.co.uk/towerhamlets/celebs&gossip-dizzee_rascal.htm) however IMDB lists 01/10/1985 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1476707/bio). I'm inclined to believe IMDB. PoisonedPigeon 14:50, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

A link with that DOB was provided from his own site some months ago, yet his own site said he was 22 when according to the DOB he would have been 21!

Are you saying you really believe he was 17 when Boy in Da Corner came out? He was listed everywhere, including out of his own mouth, as 18.

Here you go, quoting from your own link- "Dizzee gets Mercury Music Prize! - 19/09/03 Tower Hamlets born rapper Dizzee Rascal has become the first underground urban artist to win the prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

19 year old Dizzee and his debut album ’Boy in Da Corner’ beat hot favourites The Darkness and Coldplay to win the award. He said that he had not been expecting to win but he was ’happy to be recognised’"

If he was 19 in September 2003, and his birthday is October or November, the year would have to be 1983 not 1985....I highly doubt a 17 year old would get reported as 19. If anything, it would have been highlighted how impressive it was for a 17 year old to be doing all that. But I bet you can't find ANYTHING from 2003 saying he was 17.

ok, found some more links

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/14694-interview-dizzee-rascal "the 20-year old Brit" in June 05

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/17038-boy-in-da-corner "18 year-old Dizzee Rascal" in July 03

How could the guy have got his age wrong when interviewing him......

Clearly he was 18 in mid-03 when BIDC came out, so he is older than listed

Rascal is seen as the British 50 cent or 2Pac.- Bit biased.

Years active

edit

Why are his years active from 1995-present? He was only 10 in 1995 and the article itself says he started MCing at the age of 15, which would be 2000 from my calculations.

Nicely written article, but i must say that i dont think thre is anyway dizzee is meeting this date. No intreviews, no new single and stilla 10th of april release date. Whats he doing!! also im planning adding a new section metioning his record label and signings. Okay?

I agree. (It is simply a bad idea to present record release announcements as facts in a Wikipedia article). Go ahead! regards, High on a tree 23:21, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone know the story about his stabbing in Aya Napia?

                                --Djjazzyjeff69 11:43, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, the story goes that Dizzee pinched/slapped Lisa Maffia on the arse, which led to a fight with Megaman, which then later led to the stabbing. Who did the stabbing is not normally said (It would likely be seen as snitching, even more of a taboo among criminals than with regular citizens), although it would be fair to assume it was someone related to So Solid. A dispute comes with Wileys role in this, and whether or not he backed Dizzee. Dizzee seems to claim that Wiley didn't help him in the fight/stabbing, whereas Wiley says that he backed Dizzee in the fight with Megaman, but wasn't present at the stabbing. It seems this incident is the reason of the beef between them. They have both spoken about it on records, of course though there will be some self-censorship on both sides, either to protect their own reputation, or avoid snitching, or getting someone into legal trouble. There is a video on youtube called "wiley vs dizzee (dylans on a hype now)" that contains a track from each on the subject when appearing on Westwoods show. It may not be appropriate to link to that in the article however, it would be debatable to me as to whether or not that would be copyright violation, some may make a fair use argument in the interest of comment and criticism, or along some other similar lines, but it would need a lawyers advice before putting wikipedia at risk. Some comments

edit

the track 'Pu*syhole' is shown with a *, is this how it is released? Wiki rules (from what i remember) basically say that you shouldn't do this unless that is how the name appears on the official release, i believe its called bowdlerizing, an editor should know more about this rule. Also there is some question (ie citation needed) about the fact that the 'dirty stank' label existed from his early days in the scene, i remember playing the instrumental singles 'go' and 'hoe' (which are not mentioned in the article)at friends houses , and one of these definatly had the 'flys around fæces' logo on it. I also remember being under the impression that these tracks were produced by dizzee.

Hopefully someone who knows more about these things and is a good writer/researcher can look into these things, and consider them. 213.48.1.15 06:46, 26 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

EDIT:

just did a little research, it looks like some of the info that need verifing comes from the dirteestank myspace, and and interview with blackdown

http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html http://www.myspace.com/dirteestankrecordings

the dirtystank myspace page looks to be his 'offfical' myspace, as its linked to from the official site http://www.dizzeerascal.co.uk/

the blackdown site looks fairly reputable, he seems to have good contacts within the scene.

I don't know if these qualify as good enough sources though, i know that wiki generally frowns on blogs/myspaces as sources. I understand that he did a recent interview with 'the observer' which would certainly be consdireded a reasonable source from what i can tell, i don't have access to the interview so i don't know if that will have something. Another place to try and get better sources from would be rewind magazine (i think its known as RWD). I'm pretty new at this wiki stuff, so i'll leave these to a real editor to check out, hope this helps. 213.48.1.15 07:06, 26 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fast Rapping "Spitting"?

edit

There is an issue with the term "spitting" being associated with "fast rapping", which is not necessarily the case. In terms of rap vernacular, "spitting" is just another word for "rapping", "rhyming" etc... there are many MCs who use the term "spitting" and do not necessarily have a faster-paced flow (guys like Joe Budden for example). The point being made about him using a more UK Grime-like flow is definitely on point... that should be kept, but the term "spitting" is not a new term for "fast rapping". Khal 14:13, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Maybe they use it that way in England? I deleted it.--P4k 22:41, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

dizzie rascal is not fast by british standards, its just the music on the radio has been soooo bad for that long we haven't heard real rap. the good stuff AKA NOT 50 cent, more like immortal technique and other intelligent rappers. this is my personal veiw from within the culture, most will not agree but then most are on crack. anon uk. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.207.189.247 (talk) 23:23, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Politics section

edit

The politics section seems to relate to Grime music in general rather than the subject - are the speeches referred to in relation to Dizzee in particular or simply to the music scene? If the former then it should be spelled out, if the latter then I don't see that this section belongs in this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.240.72.44 (talk) 18:50, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Grime artist?

edit

According to the article, Dizzee is "probably" the "grime artist" best known by Americans. I've never even heard of grime. I would venture to say that most Americans have never heard of this person, and the comment of how he is best known in the United States is opinion rather than fact.

Everyone's heard of grime who has lived in England. If you haven't your either stupid or have been living under a rock. He's big over in the US, as he is here. And THATS fact. Get acquantied. Fix up. Look sharp. --Flashflash; 06:20, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm... I ended up on this page via a link on the Ting Tings... I'm in the US, into various music scenes (hiphop dance clubbing every weekend and the occasional rave) and I've never heard the word 'grime' in reference to a musical genre... It's not so much "big in the US" :-) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.251.1.204 (talk) 15:34, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
All of these posts are just your own personal point of views. If he is "big" in the USA than maybe find some data on his album/download sales for the country or possibly reviews by credible US magazines. Just saying that YOU haven't heard of him doesn't mean the other 314 Million of you haven't. Mishka Shaw (talk) 14:04, 3 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Birth date, again

edit

So the birth date has been changed in this article various times over the year without citing a source, e.g. this change from "18 September 1984" to "1 October 1985" (made by an IP which has since been blocked) appears to have remained in place for the last 10 months since February 2013.

I have just reduced it to the year only (for which we have a pretty good source in form of the CBC article) and added an HTML comment asking people to cite a source when re-adding a date.

Because out there on the Internet there are various conflicting versions of his birth date, we need a good reference that satisfies the requirements of Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources (".. reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy").

For example, it was suggested above to rely on IMDb ("... IMDB lists 01/10/1985 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1476707/bio). I'm inclined to believe IMDB. PoisonedPigeon 14:50, 2 October 2007 (UTC)"). But the date listed there changed (from "October 1, 1985" as late as in 2011) to "1984" today.Reply

I would say that this tweet by Dizzee Rascal, plus the YouTube videos linked above, make the September 18 date more likely, at least as the one that Dylan Mills publicly endorses himself. But as a reference to be cited in this article, they are not sufficient. See also WP:BLP.

Regards, HaeB (talk) 11:09, 8 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi HackneyE8, this edit did not actually cite a source for the 1 November 1985 date. Which article by The Guardian stated that? (In case you meant this page: http://www.theguardian.com/music/dizzeerascal - that's not a reliable source; it says that it user-generated text from last.fm, quite possibly derived from an earlier version of this Wikipedia article.)
Regards, HaeB (talk) 06:31, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ok look [1]

Birthday for the umpteenth time

edit

Yes, I know that using Twitter as a source is a bit weird, but I hope that we can close the issue once and for all now:

I guess that should be enough evidence that Dizzee's day of birth was the 18th of September 1984. --Mai-Sachme (talk) 12:45, 30 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Seems reasonable to me. A primary source can be used for noncontroversial content like this, and since it's a primary source delivered to his followers, WP:BLPPRIVACY shouldn't be an issue. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 12:51, 30 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Cyphoidbomb: Since no objection has been raised, I'd like to change the article accordingly. How would you source the information? --Mai-Sachme (talk) 14:12, 2 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'd use Template:Cite tweet. Should be a fairly painless process. :) <ref>{{cite tweet|user=dizzeerascal |number=517249697866850304...</ref> The "My birthday was sept 18th I turned 30" tweet seems the most useful, but you can always add another if you feel like it. Difference between nationality and ethnicity

edit

English is an ethnicity whereas British refers to an individuals nationality these are facts, I have changed this because he is British and not English. Question4477 (talk) 23:01, 12 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

No it doesnt. There is no such soveriegn nation as 'Britain', "Britain" is a geographical location, the British Isles, which consist of for NATIONS, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The citizens of those nations are the Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English. Four nationalities. As an Englishman I found this attempt to cancel my country, my culture, my traditions and my history, and my nationality as RACIST. The Iron Age race that was the Britons, from where the word comes from, died out 2000 years ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.237.131.5 (talk) 19:41, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
