districts not cities edit

Seeing as this article is about districts, I think it is appropriate to list and link the district articles that have been created and not just the articles about district capital cities. I am guessing that User:Chaldean took them away because most of the district articles do not exist or are just stubs. I agree with the sentiment that the article should look clean and we should encourage the development of the town articles, but I also think that it is important to distinguish between the towns (capital cities) and the jurisdictional districts. This article is about the latter and not the former. Let's talk about this some more here if there is still a debate. MPS 03:24, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think the links should go to the district articles and the articles should be called "X District", as is done for almost all other sets of district in WP. TrueColour (talk) 19:32, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Baghdad Governorate edit

Within Baghdad Governorate, how much land (square kilometers) does the actual 9-district city of Baghdad take up? I've researched quite a bit but could find no answer. --Criticalthinker (talk) 10:56, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

This document has a rough number (see section 4.3) of 950 km2. --Polaron | Talk 00:03, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I guess the 950 sq km numbers needs to be added to the city page, then? --Criticalthinker (talk) 04:09, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article naming edit

Is it ok, if I move the articles to the format "X District"? Please see at Talk:District#Article_naming that beside Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, neraly all other countries do not use "X (district)". In the articles they are written as "X District" anyway, so the linking would be more straight forward. TrueColour (talk) 19:30, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. But do keep in mind that most of the articles actually deal with the city itself, and not the entire district. So we would have to create another article. Iraqi (talk) 12:25, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category edit

As far as I could I put the articles now in the subcategories and also created some new subcategories Category:Districts of Iraq. Cat. Baghadad would need move to Cat. Baghdad Governorate. Tiraios-of-Characene (talk) 18:19, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

List of governorates edit

I suggest the list of governorates be based on ISO 3166-2, as used on the Wikipedia page for Iraqi governorates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governorates_of_Iraq).

It could also be put in alphabetical order.

Cities and Administrative Divisions edit

Is there any administrative level/division below that of district? Does Iraq have municipalities or municipal corporations (irrespective of administrative division)? I guess what I'm asking is if there is any local government in Iraq? Also, are the city districts of Baghdad Governorate on the same administrative level as the regular districts of that governorate? --Criticalthinker (talk) 06:26, 23 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Criticalthinker:, Nahiyah is the division below the district. You can see this article in Arabic Wikipedia: w:ar:قائمة نواحي العراق = List of subdistricts in Iraq.

Actually, there are some subdistricts became districts in addition to villages which became subdistricts but I have no enough official references. I have a reference of 2009. محمود (talk) 21:52, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I am unable to read Arabic. What I'm really asking is whether there is a Baghdad municipality independent of the governorate? Or, if the Baghdad municipality simply incorporates a number of districts within the governorate, which ones would those be? I've tried to find maps showing the local government boudaries of Baghdad within the governorate, but can't find any. I've also been told that there is not "Baghdad City/Municipality" seperate from governorate and that the governorate basically functions as the city government of Baghdad. If you could help me figure this out, that would be helpful. --Criticalthinker (talk) 15:02, 30 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Criticalthinker:, I'm from Baghdad. Baghdad Governorate or province is constituted of Baghdad city in addition to Baghdad countryside (which includes Abu Ghraib District, Mahmudiya District and Al-Tarmia District is Al-Karkh side (Taji District also, but I think Taji is subdistrict) and Al-Mada'in District and Al-Istiqlal District (I'm not sure about this one) in addition to some other towns which became recently a district (Al Hussainiya district) is Al Rasafa side)

Baghdad city is maintained by Mayoralty of Baghdad while Baghdad Governorate (City and countrysides) is governed by provincial government.

Baghdad City also divided into district (6 districts) and this is different from the Municipalities of baghdad city which are subdivisions of Mayoralty of Baghdad. محمود (talk) 20:08, 30 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

See, that last paragraph is what is confusing me. How is it that the 6 districts of Baghdad City (which I figure are divisions of Baghdad governorate) are different from the municipalities of Baghdad City? I think what would really help - as I've been trying to figure this out for YEARS - is a map showing the different divisions within Baghdad governorate. Even simply giving me a list of the disitricts of Baghdad City. Maybe even using another city as an example to describe the levels of government would help. As far as I can tell, the only level beneath Baghdad Governorate would be the districts, and that some of these districts are incorporated as municipality/city for Baghdad proper. --Criticalthinker (talk) 13:44, 1 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

As shown in the map of Baghdad governorate, the 2 south, west and the north districts are out side Baghdad city. They are the countryside of Baghdad. The other districts compose the city of Baghdad (some parts of these districts also outside the city). District is the administrative division. Mayoralty of Baghdad is responsible for service in the city only. The mayoralty divided Baghdad into Municipalities. Each Municipality is composed of several neighborhoods. For example, I'm living in the west side of Baghdad as it is divided by the river. It is called Al Karkh. Al Karkh includes 5 districts of Baghdad. Only 2 of them are in the city. I'm living in Al Karkh district but this district contains 2 municipalities: Al Mansour and Al Rasheed. محمود (talk) 21:01, 1 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Mahmoudalrawi: Quick question. Every source I've been able to find lists 9 municipalities in the Baghdad Mayoralty, but on your talk page where we have discussed this, you list 13 municipalities: Karkh, Mansour, Al Rashid, Dora, Kadhimiya, Shula, Adhamiyah, Shaab, New Baghdad, Ghadeer, Karadah, Sadr City 1 and Sadr City 2. Where are you getting the additional municipalities? Also, for each of the districts these municipalities exist within (Karkh, Kadhimiya, Adhamiyah, Rusafa, Sadr City 1 and Sadr City 2), do they share the same boundaries/borders when you add them all together? It would really help if there was a map showing district and subdistrict boundaries with the boundaries of the municipalities layed over them. --Criticalthinker (talk) 14:24, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Discrepancies across other language Wikipedia pages edit

Both the number of governorates and of districts vary across the several presentations - can they be synchronised. . Jackiespeel (talk) 13:47, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
