Image edit

The image on this article isn't particularly informative; it only shows the tip of the stalk, not the structure of the plant. There is one in the gallery which would work well if cropped. Thoughts? 67.249.96.125 (talk) 19:22, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Agreed, I just changed the main image to the one of the whole plant, and moved the picture of the stalk to the gallery. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.230.129.230 (talk) 20:42, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Genetics edit

I learned in a class that this genus is tetraploid. Should this be noted in the article? Ninjatacoshell 17:20, 14 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

That you learned it in class?  :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.97.25.93 (talkcontribs)

Root system edit

Many wiki articles describe root system of the plant (and depth). This is interesting to someone learning about the plant, especially removal.

1) pulling weeds will come out easier than wanted foliage, moreso if done regularly

2) some weed chemicals work on the principle of constricting week roots, while others are used

Organics, herbacides, home remedies edit

  • keep area cut
  • eliminate bare spots (spread grass seed or use cover)
  • Sprinkling table salt is one way of combating crab grass. But the amount of salt used must be limited because too much can end up damaging the soil. A gallon of white vinegar mixed with a few drops of soap sprayed on the crab grass often can lead to its gradual death. Yet another home remedy is pouring some boiling water over the crab grass
  • baking soda?
  • some weeks grow at low pH, use lime
  • see Herbicides

More on the EDIBLE Particulars of this Plant is Needed edit

"The grains of D. sanguinalis -- naturalized [in North America] from Eurasia -- are edible and were highly prized by the Slavs. This crabgrass was at one point cultivated in Poland as a cereal plant." -- from page 471 of The Encyclopedia of Edible Plants of North America by Dr. Francois Couplan.
