Hong Kong Junta edit

This follows on a revert I made here. That revert was questioned on my talk page by Foofbun, who said there: "In your reversion of the bit on the topic your notes says Cited source appears to have been rendered outdated by its publisher. I have never come across a comment like that before, could you please explain for our edification? Has the publisher come out and said 'this if false' or is it merely out of print? Thanks."

I thought that deserved a response here instead of there. I want to thank Foodbun for pointing this out, and for having done so gently -- certainly more gently than I would have if one of my edits, even one with errors, had been reverted with such an edit summary. I might have called the edit summary an unhelpful smart-assed remark; it surely was that, and I apologize to Foofbun and to the community for having made it.

Looking back at the revert, I see that I must have done it in haste. I don't recall the details which led me to make it, but I see now that it the reverted edit attempted to add also known as the Hong Kong Junta to the lead sentence and to cite two supporting sources, but that it garbled the cites so as to introduce garble into the rendered wikitext in the version I reverted. I don't recall noticing the second source or the garble, or other details, but what I think must have happened is that I attempted to look at the first of two bare-url sources in the garbled cites (https://www.dfa.gov.ph/dfa-news/news-from-our-foreign-service-postsupdate/17037-ph-consulate-hosts-lecture-on-emilio-aguinaldo-s-revolutionaries-exile-in-hk) and gotten a message that the source could not be found -- that sort-of fits with what I was probably trying to say in the smart-assed edit summary.

The targets at both of the bare-url cites are visible now, however, and I've looked at them. Neither of them indicates that the Dictatorial Government was "also known as the Hong Kong Junta", so I think that my revert should stand for now. Both sources make clear, I think, that the body known as the Hong Kong Junta was located in Hong Kong before and during the brief existence of the Dictatorial Government and was a separate body from that government. I have never seen either source cited here previously and thank Foofbun for having made them visible to me by citing them here. I'll need to look at them more carefully but, from what I've seen so far, it seems to me that some mention ought to be made of the Hong Kong Junta in this article, and that this article ought to wikilink to a new article about that body. The second reverted cite (https://calhoun.nps.edu/handle/10945/17019) is a web page which describes this source, a 1974 thesis titled THE FILIPINO JUNTA IN HONG KONG, 1898-1903 : HISTORY OF A REVOLUTIONARY ORGANIZATION, and provides a link to that as a pdf file. I'm guessing that there is sufficient information in that thesis to serve as the basis for least a WP:STUB article on the Hong Kong Junta. I'll look at that.

Again, apologies for Foofban in particular and to the community in general for my unhelpful smart-ass edit summary, and thanks to Foofban for citing these sources. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 14:10, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Thank you Wtmitchell, for a superb model of reply that was not only polite but highly informative. I see by the articles you take credit for you have some expertise in the Philippine government in exile. Is it possible you could include with the article (that I feel would be better than a separate article) a bit about the Hong Kong Junta, the Spanish authorities buying them off with funds, and whether there was clandestine funding of the Dictatorial Government, Junta, etc by the USA prior to formal hostilities with Spain. Unlike the Kingdom of Hawaii there wouldn't have been a financially well off Continental American plantation owner group (or was there?). If this is been an "edit war", it's going to be the readers who will be the victors.Foofbun (talk) 23:30, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Draft article edit

I have started working on a draft for a Hong Kong Junta article intended to replace the redirect currently at that mainspace name which targets this article. It is presently at a very early stage, and is located in my userspace at User:Wtmitchell/sandbox. I hope that its development will be a collaborative effort and invite other interested editors to pitch in here as they would on any mainspace article -- with constructive edits to the developing draft and comments/discussions on its talk page aimed on improving the article. • Thank you for that, I look forward to your future article. I always find Wikipedia articles rather like the old Stone soup story when one person starts something everyone is keen to share their contributions to make a rich rewarding broth of knowledge for all...Foofbun (talk) 23:34, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

I've moved the {{in creation}} article into place at Hong Kong Junta. It is a work in progress, and I intend to add content as I have time. Other interested editors are invited to contribute. Cheers. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 10:18, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
