I read Young's column for years and found him to be a laughable, right-wing blowhard.

Young's "America" had no place for racial diversity.

In I Never Had It Made By Jackie Robinson and Alfred Duckett, Robinson, on page 93 says, "The sports writer who seemed to be doing his best to make me revert to the old cheek-turning, humble Robinson was Dick Young of the New York Daily News. . .I used to think he was a nice guy personally, and I knew he was a good sportswriter. As time went by, Young became, in my book, a racial bigot. My trouble with Dick began right after 1949 when he first warned me that I should refrain from sounding off because I was offending sportswriters like himself."
In other words, because Robinson was unwilling to act out the role of subservient, shuffling, 'yes massah' stereotypical African American, Young became offensively angry. Young also had the same attitude towards Mohammad Ali. Young was constantly making references to 'My America'.
Keith Olbermann has this to say about Young

"whose work, with ever-increasing frequency, became peppered with references to "my America."

"I can't believe this is happening in My America;" "We do not tolerate these people in My America;" "This man does not belong in my America." His America gradually revealed itself.

Insular. Isolationist. Backwards-looking. Mindlessly flag-waving. Racist. No second chances. A million rules, but only for the other guy.

In Whatever Happened to the Hall of Fame? (1995, a/k/a The Politics of Glory), Chapter 15, author Bill James acknowledges Dick Young's abrasiveness (in spades, if I can use that term) but notes that Young was instrumental in bullying and embarassing Bowie Kuhn into acceding to Satchel Paige's induction into the Hall of Fame proper, rather than a special "Negro Leagues" wing thereof as Kuhn originally intended (this being a truly misguided idea). I think that's noteworthy in Young's defense. WHPratt (talk) 02:36, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Dick Young isn't a baseball Hall of Fame member. There is no "Writers' Wing" in the Hall. Young is one of the recipients of the annual J. G. Taylor Spink Award, and as such appears on a scroll somewhere in the Cooperstown museum. WHPratt (talk) 17:43, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
