Family, subfamily & tribe edit

The USDA report cited in the article, presumably based on Gill (1993) said that:

  • familia = Margarodidae
  • subfamilia = Coelostomidiina
  • tribe = Pityococcini

But Margarodidae seems to have been split up recently with some pieces even going to the Monophlebidae. I find Unruh et al. (2008) saying: "Later, Koteja (1974, 1996, 2000a, b) recognized ten families within the Margarodidae sl, elevating Morrison's five subfamiles to the family rank, elevating the tribes Callipappini (Margarodinae), Marchalinini (Coelostomidiinae) and Pityococcini (Margarodinae) to family rank ..." Unfortunately, I do not have access to the Unruh article, Systematic Entomology 33.1 (2008): 8-50. But, Koteja's elevation of the Pityococcini to Pityoccidae seems to have been generally approved. See, for example, Williams, D. J., et al. (2011) "A study of the scale insect genera Puto Signoret (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccoidea: Putoidae) and Ceroputo Šulc (Pseudococcidae) with a comparison to Phenacoccus Cockerell (Pseudococcidae)." Zootaxa 2802(1): 22; and Hodgson, Chris J. and Hardy, Nate B. (2013) "The phylogeny of the superfamily Coccoidea (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha) based on the morphology of extant and extinct macropterous males." Systematic Entomology 38(4): 794-804. In Gullan, P. J., and L. G. Cook. (2007) "Phylogeny and higher classification of the scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccoidea)." Zootaxa 1668: 413-425; the authors said: "The morphological disparity of these various margarodid s. l. higher taxa (Morrison, 1928), their great age in the fossil record (e.g. Koteja, 2000a,b, 2001a, 2004) and also the difficulty of reconstructing their interrelationships using morphology of females and nymphs (e.g., Gullan & Sjaarda, 2001), suggest that Koteja's higher classification of the archaeococcoid taxa is justified. The recent systematic work of several authors has supported Koteja’s classification (e.g. Foldi, 2004, 2005; Hodgson & Foldi, 2006; Miller et al., 2007)." Although EOL has not yet (December 2013) made the change, I see no reason not to go ahead with it here on the Wikipedia, therefore I have changed the family to Pityoccidae with no subfamily and no tribe. --Bejnar (talk) 04:52, 26 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
