Council is not an area edit

The Derwent Valley Council is the elected local government body that governs the Municipality of Derwent Valley. It is not correct to say that the council is a local governent area. The area is the municipality. I think this should be changed. Phaedrus86 10:25, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Take a look at Talk:Local Government Areas of Tasmania and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Australian_places#LGA_naming_convention? for prior discussion on this. In short, the new naming both aligns with the council's own use on their individual websites and on http://www.lgat.tas.gov.au , and with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian places national naming convention. It is intended that the articles be about the elected group as well as the area, so we went with what the official websites use. There will be redirects going to all the LGA's as well so it doesn't matter what name is linked or searched for - they will all link to the same place. -- Chuq 12:09, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have no argument with standardising naming the LGA articles after the councils and not the areas, but that doesn't mean they are one and the same thing, it just means that the standard is to name the articles after the councils.
Your points about council's own use are not completely correct. If you follow the link to the Derwent Valley Council you will see that they refer to the "Derwent Valley Municipality" and the municipal area - they do not regard the municipality and the council as being the same object. It also gets a bit surreal when the New Norfolk article refers to the town being "part of the Derwent Valley Council" - what, the whole town forms part of the council, troops up to council meetings, etc? I think not. If you followed council terminology used on their web site then the town would be described as being in the Derwent Valley Municipality or the Derwent Valley Council municipal area.
I don't want to change the standard, but perhaps if councils like Derwent Valley Council refer to the municipal area then maybe towns within the area could be described as being in the area, not specifically the council. I would have used a link to the council article with an alias "Derwent Valley Council municipal area, then everything makes sense.Phaedrus86 05:29, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
There isn't a problem with re-wording links such as "the [[Derwent Valley Council]] muncipal area" or "the [[Derwent Valley Council|Derwent Valley municipality]]" if it makes things clearer. One of the benefits of going with the "Council" name is that if you use "municipality", then you also have to decide if it is "Municipality of X" or "X Municipality" or "X municipality". And there will be redirects with those names, so you can even link directly to them and they will still work". -- Chuq 06:00, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Additional comment: I have added the Infobox to New Norfolk, Tasmania so that the LGA is listed as an item in the box, and is not in the text of the article itself. This reduces any possible confusion. -- Chuq 06:43, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
if you use "municipality", then you also have to decide if it is "Municipality of X" or "X Municipality" or "X municipality" - I agree.
Infobox to New Norfolk, Tasmania so that the LGA is listed - an excellent solution. I'll sink back into the swamp and let you get on with your good work. Phaedrus86 06:52, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
