untitled edit

In creating this page I note that according to the 'Old Derbian' a history is being written. I suggest that the writing of that history might be made easier if it were carried out here on wikipedia, possibly branching off to a detailed History of Derby School page. More details of each era might also be gathered on pages such as Derby School - 1960's. Though there is a danger of going beyond the normal bounds of an encyclopedia with such information, Wikipedia provides such an attractive way to gather information on a famous school that I cannot see such an approach being seriously challenged by Wikipedia editors (space on Wikipedia is not a problem). Personally, I would like to see an account of past teachers and what became of them. --Lindosland 14:52, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've contributed some of my memories of the school from the later 60s and early 70s. I agree with the idea of a project to capture some of the personal history of this school which, I'm sure, played a great part in many boys lives. I don't currently have an account on Wikipedia, Terry Booth (Derby School, 1965-1972)

There appears to be some contention about the motto of the school and it's translation. Vita Sine Litteris Mors is the school motto, the verb 'est' is assumed and the translation is Life without Learning is the one I always understood whilst at the school - Terry Booth 1 March 2007.

I agree with Terry. I was at Derby School from 1968 to 1975 and the blazer badge was " Vita Sine Litteris Mors" (note the apparent incorrect Latin Grammer). The first thing "Sweat" Elliott told us "seccies" was that it stood for "Life Without Learning is Death". - Dave Cartledge (Fullers House - 1968-1975)

Quality edit

As a page this is more than a stub but in my opinion it lacks references and a complete history to bring it up to the standard that it importance demands. If this is the school founded all those centuries ago then it is very important to the schools project.Victuallers 15:22, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Improvement edit

This page has come on amazingly, I am sure it is a B now and I think you could put it forward for higher ratings. The way to do this is to add it to the Schools Project Assessment page. The fact that you created the Derbyshire template for all the local schools to is brilliant. Had an idea..... I'll be back Victuallers 13:45, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

in line reffing edit

I have started to add in-line referencing using the ref and reflist tags. I'm not sure it looks better now - but I'm hoping that you can now see how it could look much better. Their should also be a last sub title of external links at the end of the article. What I haven't demonstrated that you can use the same ref over and over again which is probably appropriate for the alumni. After you have used a ref and given it the name="DerbyAlumni"> then <ref name="DerbyAlumni"/> will allow you to use the same ref over and over again. Do note the final / in the tag.. its v.important. Hope this helps. P.S. You should use the blockquote tag for large quotes Victuallers 14:13, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you again, Victuallers, I've been working on it. Xn4 10:03, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Walchelin de Ferriers edit

Have you found the "de ferrers" try Henry de ferrers who was given lands. I's sure there must be a link ... we need a historian. Victuallers 21:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have started a Walkelin de Derby article. It appears that a Norman called Henri de Ferrieres was his father. Xn4 10:09, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi...yes. Henry has been a major article for me. He was "given" every important manor/village in Derbyshire as a reward for helping at Hastings in 1066 etc. If you look at "what links here" for Henry ... then thats my work (mostly) Victuallers 19:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

More Images edit

I've uploaded more images from my visit in May. Apologies for the delay OldDerbeian 12:27, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Great pics, Terry! Well done. Xn4 21:28, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

We're making some progress, Bluegoblin. I'll leave a note here when I think we're ready for a GA attempt. Xn4 21:48, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alleyne FitzHerbert edit

I though you may be interested to know that a (small) picture of a Derby School old boy will be on the main page in the next 12 hours or so. Alleyne FitzHerbert is the lead DYK. Victuallers 11:24, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well done, Victuallers! Xn4 21:48, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

1960's Pics edit

I've chosen these for the fun element, as well as the fact that they show surroundings and teachers familiar to many. Too many such photos could become a problem, but they are easily taken down. What do you think? --Memestream (talk) 02:05, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think they are all fine, they should be kept. Xn4 02:59, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Section Ordering edit

The Cadet forces and Notable masters sections have been inserted as subsections of the St. Helen's House Period. The Cadet forces in fact we active during the start (at least until 1972) of the Littleover period. So perhaps these two section might be better placed following the Littleover Period. Certainly, many of the masters listed for the St. Helen's House period also taught at the Littleover school. What do you think? OldDerbeian 12:52, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree, Terry. I've made the changes you suggested, and I've added "The CCF survived into the years at Littleover." Xn4 03:13, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Use of A and B blocks? edit

"The St Helen's House complex consisted of the House itself (called 'A'-block), which contained mainly administrative offices". During my time there (1960-65) many lessons were held in A Block, notably English, French and history. B block contained the physics and biology labs and a room for maths and RI. Is it true that A block was mainly administrative, perhaps before my time? --Lindosland (talk) 14:30, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're right, we should also mention the classrooms, and I'm not sure about the "mainly", so I've changed that to read "which contained classrooms and offices". Is that agreeable, Lindosland? Xn4 12:26, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that's fine thanks. --Lindosland (talk) 13:12, 11 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Boathouse at Parker's Piece edit

I can't recollect boat houses at Parker's Piece - but the little bit of rowing that I did at the school was later than my St.Helen's house time. After the school had left St. Helen's House, boats were housed at the Derby Rowing club site which was further down and the other side of the river. Can anyone else confirm the boat houses at Parker's Piece? Were they next to the pavilion?

Derby School Crest edit

I found this [1] whilst looking for a better source for an image of the derby school crest. It contains a picture of a Derby School crest from 1906 on a Wills Tobacco card. The crest is not like one I have seen before. Not sure whether it is worthy (or possible) to include it.

OldDerbeian (talk) 11:16, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

As coloured, that's new to me, but the design is pretty much the same as in the shield which survives on B-Block and also as on the cap badge of the school corps dating from the 1940s (see Derby School article). Presumably it was a variation on the 'heraldic badge' devised by Walter Clark in 1883, which of course wasn't actually granted by the College of Arms. As the cigarette card dates from 1906, I think it should be all right to upload it. Xn4 23:37, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think the other designs may be of use too to the "schools project". The copyright I think is 70 years after the authors death. I think you'll be lucky to get a case from an old people home. And if they sold one packet in the USA then the copyright ends in 1923. These are not only free images but they should also be modifiable. I think most image programs could change the "white" to be WHITE and the reddy areas to be red. This article at present is missing a really sharp logo and I think that Old Derbeian has found a solution for you. Well done Victuallers (talk) 14:48, 4 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've edited the crest from 1906 and posted it up in place of the the sheild image. I'm trying to gather some evidence about the changes in the crest which I'll post up, if successfull OldDerbeian (talk) 17:55, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

- oh better Victuallers (talk) 11:29, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've added a couple of little pieces to the pictures of the Moorway lane school. Might be better expanded in the main text? It would be good if we could find some colour photos from 1966.It would also be interesting to get a bit more information about 'the Pearson building' who was Pearson? - in my time there, I can only remember it as B-Block.OldDerbeian (talk) 12:15, 29 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've added a transcription of the stone on the front of B Block. I'd appreciate anyone whose latin is better than mine to translate it, but it appears to me that the Victorian expansion and extension of the school was done with patronage from the Prince of Wales who had something to do with promoting the extension of the school and I think the stone says that it was laid by the then Duke of Devonshire. I've a picture of the stone which I'll upload in due course. I guess that the 1901 date is something to do with the 1901 education act. This is an encyclopaedia article edit

It is not a school newsletter. Results of cricket matches and old boys' events are not appropriate for Wikipedia. Please review WP:NOT. Edits to articles should be made in a style consistent with Wikipedia:Manual of Style. In this case of the edits I have just reverted, edits did not adhere to Wikipedia style with respect to boldfacing (see WP:BOLDFACE) and capitalisation (MOS:CAPS) amongst other parts of the Manual of Style. It must also be written from a neutral point of view - an encyclopaedia article should not be enthusiastic or supportive of its subject, but just report the facts dispassionately. I doubt that extensive discussion of the appointment of an archivist for the old boys' society is appropriate for this article either. See WP:UNDUE. Is the archivist more important than the head master? The games master? The librarian? I doubt it, but you wouldn't know that from reading the version of the article that I just reverted. Derby School pages edit

First may I thank both OldDerbeian and Ground Zero for their valuable help and advice. As a new contributor to this particular page I found their editing advice with the talk page very helpful. In relation to the request in 2008 from OldDerbeian I hope the additional details now inserted about the original position of the Derby Rowing Club-House is now fully explained? I have two old photos one of which may be useful to add? As a new contributor now finding all the advice already here about editing was something I have to admit I was unaware if when I first started. Would a recent photograph of the Parker's Piece pavilion be useful? Jbhygiene (talk) 11:47, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I only experience rowing from the new club house (shared with Derby rowing club). Pictures I think would greatly help. OldDerbeian (talk) 13:13, 19 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Currently research is taking place on the name Pearson building (Block 'B') and it may be that John Loughborough Pearson (15 July 1817 to 11 Dec 1897) a well known Gothic revival architect may have designed the new annex. Pearson's famous building included Truro Cathedral. We are anxious to clarify this position.Jbhygiene (talk) 17:37, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pictures edit

I notice that the pictures appear to have been vandalised. Anyone have any ideas if these can be reverted. I have lost the originals of these images.OldDerbeian (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 13:58, 9 December 2011 (UTC).Reply

Headings edit

"Derby School Revisited" edit

I have just added an external link to "Derby School - the Sixties Revisited" which is on Youtube, and have also referred to it in the section on conversion to offices. This is a short (15 min) film shot in HD by myself and schoolfriend Dave Goodwin in September 2012. I have looked carefully at the rules for links to Youtube, and conclude that the link is appropriate as it provides a source of valuable images and information to those interested in current developments while it aims also to evoke memories of the St Helen's house era in those who were there. There are no copyright issues with this film. I own the copyright, and the copyright administrators for the two musical excerpts have accepted the use under normal Youtube arrangements. I hope this is acceptable to others. Lindosland (talk) 13:10, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Motto edit

I have reverted the motto to remove the verb from the end and to be in with the other instances in the article, which is the correct version. — Preceding unsigned comment added by OldDerbeian (talkcontribs) 14:07, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
