Editor assistance needed at Talk:Welfare edit

It would be useful to have some input from editors whose native language is Irish English to provide their perspective to help resolve a dispute over the article Welfare. In essence the argument is about the meaning of the word welfare. One school of thought is that Welfare nowadays mostly means "financial aid for the poor" and that the article about that topic should be simply Welfare. The other school of thought is that the word "welfare" has two meanings ("well-being" and "financial aid for the poor") and that the article welfare should be a disambiguation page explaining the two meanings and then link off to the many articles there are about "financial aid to the poor" such as Social security. One idea is to move the content now in welfare moved over to Welfare (financial aid).

Department of Social ProtectionDepartment of Employment Affairs and Social Protection – Propose moving the article back to its old name after it has boldly been moved to the new title with the edit summary "Employment moved to DETE". However, the website of the department [1] is still at the old name so this surely requires a full discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:24, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Marcocapelle, as the person who made that move, I actually agree with you. We should establish a best practice of moving these pages only after we've seen the government order with the new name, and not any press release or speech from the Taoiseach. Wikipedia should reflect the current position, and not a well-founded projection as to the future name of a department. It can also lead to errors and mistaken mergers, so it really is better to hold off. Although, as the transfer of functions happened last week, the renaming is likely to be in the next few days, so I'd keep an eye on Tuesday's Iris Oifigiúil and SIs on ISB. So I don't object now to reverting, but moving back could be quite imminent. That said, I'm beginning to wonder if the renaming of DAFM will ever happen, so we might want to revisit Talk:Minister for Agriculture and the Marine#Requested move 21 August 2020. —Iveagh Gardens (talk) 12:54, 17 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's been officially renamed, so close this discussion. Spleodrach (talk) 15:51, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
