What part of Islam does the muslims of Indonesia belong to - would be good to have that stated I believe. I can not find any reference to this in the CIA factbook, though its listed for other muslim nations, like Pakistan, Afghanistan etc. Ulflarsen 20:20, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

If I'm not mistaken, most Indonesians are Sunni (although my experience is that if you would ask them, most of them wouldn't know what to anwser). MartijnL 07:48, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
Most of them never cocerned (even know) with sunni-shi'a divergence. Indonesian muslim almost never affected by shi'a.Aditthegrat 17:47, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Bahasa

The article says that Bahasa Indonesia is a form of Malay and has spread through the archipelago since independence. But as far as I know, it has been a lingua franca for centuries for the entire region, including present-day Malysia. So the two languages are just two manifestations of the same language which has been around for a long time before independence. Something that did spread after independence was the new Indonesian spelling that was based on the Dutch writing of the language. But I don't really know enough about this to change the text.

Related to this is the demography, about which I will put up a posting in the Indonesia talk page. One thing that is ignored is the enormous cultural diversity in Indonesia, which is not surprising given the amount of islands. Which was the reason for the emergence of the lingua franca. Chinese minority numbers

There is a huge discrepancy in the numbers of ethnic Chinese mentioned in this article. In the text 8 million Chinese are mentioned, in the list it is only 1.8 million. I presume that 8 million is probably the correct number as in most publications on demographics for Indonesia, a percentage of up to 5 is mentioned regarding the occurrence of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Takeaway (talkcontribs) 20:41, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

The correct number for 2000 is 0.84% or around 1.7-1.8 million according to a book published based on the census findings. These numbers of course could be underreported due to fear of discrimination but nonetheless, the census numbers should be used I believe. Basser g (talk) 23:27, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

As the question of ethnicity rather refers to self-identification, it is quite useless to discuss about the "true" number of "ethnic chinese" etc. Depending on the current political climate, more or less Indonesians, will call themselves "Chinese". What is missing in this article is a critical view on the role of ethnicity in Indonesia and the process of ethnicizing. Until now, this article is just an affirmation of ethnicised politics (in my opinion). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.96.78.37 (talk) 07:08, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
