Athenian democracy and Roman Republic are older than Landsgemeinde edit

By mentioning Landsgemeinde as one of the oldest direct democracies, but not Athenian democracy or the Roman Republic, the article is misleading. Please correct it. -Pgan002 (talk) 11:41, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Self-contradiction: Landsgemeinde a pure direct democracy? edit

The intro seems to contradict itself about Landsgemeinde form of democracy. One sentence says that the Swiss system is a semi-representative democracy; another sentence says that the Landsgemeinde is one of the purest forms of direct democracy. -Pgan002 (talk) 11:46, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's not contradictory, although it's quite poorly phrased so your mistake isn't at all surprising. The Landsgemeinde is pure direct democracy, but Switzerland doesn't use that nationally any more (only in two local areas). The national system is a semi-direct/semi-representative democracy now, referendum-based with representatives. Denny de la Haye (talk) 18:22, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
