Ronald Hamowy

This is an interesting case of Nationality. He was born in Shanghai in 1937. However, Shanghai was still being recognized by The Republic of China (not the government of China today which is PLA) as a city state with international sections mostly governed by the French from 1931 to when the Japanese tried to take over beginning in 1937. In 1941, Japan finally did take the city which it held until 1945. The new Chinese government took Shanghai for good in 1949.

Furthermore, Mr Hamowy moved to the US and Canada later in life where he taught and made significant contributions to political thought in both countries. He passed away at his last residence outside of Washington, D.C. Chinese American Canadian?

I think we can regard Hamowy's place of birth as not significant. He was born into a Jewish family who happened to be in Shanghai when he was born. Stating Shanghai-born or Chinese-born implies he had Chinese ethnicity, which is not correct. We have had similar discussions about Googie Withers who was born in India but not reported here as Indian-born. Hamowy should just be Canadian or American or Canadian American, whichever is correct.
