Football players lost at sea

edit

How do we handle this? Wait until they are officially pronounced? Just curious. Wjmummert (KA-BOOOOM!!!!) 07:55, 5 March 2009 (UTC) ps - is it okay to add the Jake Peavy to the Cubs trade to this list? Looks like that finally died as well.Reply

If you mean Sonny Fai, he has been added to this page many times, but is always removed in the absence of proof of death. WWGB (talk) 08:50, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
It has been positively confirmed that they were on the boat when it overturned. It's been reported that the 3 lost men removed their life jackets. They recovered the boat, and it it's been over 96 hours since it capsized. There is zero chance they are still alive out there. How is this any different from notable plane crash victims who are listed before their bodies are positively identified? (many are never identified) BurienBomber (talk) 20:03, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
They are talking about Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith. While its reasonable to assume they are now deceased, until their bodies are found, all that can technically be done is say they are missing. On the other hand, they could be declared legally dead at some point in the future. (I think Steve Fossett was legally dead before they found him.) DandyDan2007 (talk) 10:26, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
So is Lord Lucan - still not found. Kittybrewster 12:52, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
At the moment they are "missing presumed dead", but not "confirmed dead" or "legally declared dead". Listing them here would be speculating and crystalballing on their fate. Aecis·(away) talk 16:18, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Kenneth Garner

edit

Is he important enough?Max Mux (talk) 17:01, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

If he does not "garner" an article in one month then the entry will be deleted. WWGB (talk) 23:19, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Really? Racehorses?

edit

March 2nd: Urban Sea... seriously.. during foling! (also: i thought this list where for humans) Edit: Seems that's not the only racehorce in these lists.. Nichlas (talk) 14:41, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

If a racehorse, or other animal, is notable enough to have its own article here, consensus has historically been in favour of reporting the death. Why not? --Rodhullandemu 14:46, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Then how about we add this Sea Turtle? I'm suggesting to keep the list to People, and not animals.Nichlas (talk) 12:23, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Was this animal notable enough to have an article here? Doesn't look like it. --Rodhullandemu 13:09, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
We don't have an article on C. Turtle but there is one on D. Turtle. WWGB (talk) 13:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
And rightly so. There's not many animals that can "[do] machines" or rock purple headgear as convincingly. tomasz. 14:08, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
yeh and get rid of tonda the orangutan147.188.228.135 (talk) 15:55, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
no, i don't think we will. we keep notable animals. read it again. tomasz. 18:02, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Natasha Richardson

edit

There are multiple conflicting reports on the situation, but the BBC are consistently reporting (for example 5 minutes ago) that she is not dead. Please wait for more definite news before adding her to this list. Premature inclusion here should be avoided for obvious reasons. Bretonbanquet (talk) 02:07, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Confirmed now, sadly. Bretonbanquet (talk) 00:32, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

News sites confirm death occurred early this morning Martyn Smith (talk) 08:14, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Kevin Mosley

edit

Someone please explain how Mr. Mosley's death is notable. While sad, as all premature deaths are, he was only a pilot for Fed-Ex, one of thousands, and had no previous notable achievements or newsworthy presence. Furthermore, the co-pilot (Anthony Stephen-Pino) was not included, but it should be understood his circumstances are the same. Either both should be included if they meet the page's criteria, or Kevin Mosley's information should be removed. I request removal. --ADWNSW (talk) 13:59, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

He has an article, therefore he gets to remain on the list till he doesn't. Since the article is currently going through AfD and likely to be zappaed for the reasons you mention anyway, we can just leave it till the normal procedure is followed. tomasz. 14:10, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
And so it goes ... [1]. WWGB (talk) 22:38, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Derek Benfield

edit

The ref supporting Derek Benfield is a newspaper death announcement (not a story or obit produced by the newspaper's editorial staff). Is this really a reliable source? 87.114.147.43 (talk) 20:59, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Newspapers are generally very careful about such announcements, as are we, and usually require some evidence such as a death certificate. On that basis, I'd say it's OK. --Rodhullandemu 21:16, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Telegraph's page on how to place an announcement only says they confirm by phone. The Guardian says the same (PDF). There's no evidence that they demand a death certificate, just 20 quid on someone's credit card and a callback. In this specific case there's no reason to doubt Derek Benfield's announcement, but as this mechanism has been used in the past for trollish and comic effect, Wikipedia runs the risk of being manipulated by this mechanism. 87.114.147.43 (talk) 21:43, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
There must be a level of trust somewhere along the line, and we rely on the accuracy of the sources we cite since we cannot check beyond them. The Telegraph has a reputation generally for accuracy, and false reports must be very rare (See, for example, Premature obituaries). I don't think we'd incur any legal liability for a mistaken report of death based on a normally reliable source. --Rodhullandemu 21:56, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm not talking about obituaries, which are prepared by journalists. I'm talking about classified advertisments, which are submitted by paying advertisers. Above you say "usually require some evidence such as a death certificate" - can I ask you to provide a source that supports that claim? Failing that, these ads are no more a reliable source than is a classified ad for Arthur Daley motors. I don't know why you're bringing up "legal liability" - that's not the standard for reliability. 87.114.147.43 (talk) 22:06, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've asked for wider input at Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Newspaper_death_announcements. 87.114.147.43 (talk) 22:18, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

My experience dealing with deaths in the family is that death announcements are printed quickly so that friends will know to attend the funeral. Death certificates are often not available fast enough to meet this need. The announcements are often placed through a funeral home, so in those cases the newspaper is dealing with someone they know. --Jc3s5h (talk) 22:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tonda an orangutan

edit

23/03/09 This death is ridiculously recorded; apparently Tonda the sumatran orangutan was 50 and died in captivity in america. Please remove this death of an animal. If nothing else it is crass that an animal death should be placed as equal to human. 147.188.228.135 (talk) 15:54, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is longstanding consensus among editors that deaths of notable animals are recorded here. If you wish to renegotiate this in the face of historical acceptance, please feel free to do so, but bearing in mind our neutral point of view. --Rodhullandemu 16:14, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
sorry yeh i hadn't noticed this notice on the article page regarding that; i thought it was just an animal lover dropping it in147.188.228.135 (talk) 16:33, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Have removed Jean Michel Jarre from this list.

It was Maurice Jarre who has died.

Sulim Yamadayev

His page says he died today, however this recent deaths article says the 28th. Decisions?

New month

edit

The majority opinion at "Talk:Deaths in 2009#Don't remove a month before it's over" was to leave the old month in place until seven days of the new month have elapsed. That implies that March should not be split off/collapsed until that time has elapsed. Regards, WWGB (talk) 05:30, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Naji Jaber

edit

I dare say the late actor (Arabic: ناجي جبر; better known as Abu 'Antar, Arabic: أبو عنتر) is known to almost all the 300 million Arab people. He is notable enough I think. __ AMSA83 19:26, 31 March 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by AMSA83 (talkcontribs)

Sandra Cantu

edit

Several reversions have occurred regarding the inclusion (or not) of Sandra Cantu, linked to Sandra Cantu homicide. As implied in this page move [2], it is the event that is notable and not the poor unfortunate child. It is moot whether the listing remains here for one month or not, but without an article on the person I believe it has no long term future here. WWGB (talk) 02:43, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
