Unverified personal and other content
editI initiated a phone conversation with Mr Alston today, primarily to confirm that he is still working at The West, in whose article I saw him wrongly listed as a "Notable former employee". In the course of the conversation, he indicated that he had security concerns about published identification of close family members. Therefore, I decided to remove some content (which in any event was unverified). It is hardly necessary to explain that creators of political cartoons are frequently subjected to hostile vilification, including death threats, which can include family members. Mr Alston was unable to verify the total number of his published cartoons (given by a previous editor at "nearly 10,000" as of 2005. However it can be readily estimated that a 6-days-weekly leader-page cartoon multiplied by 27 years (allowing for holidays) adds up to about 8,000. To this must be added a smaller number of drawings done for other editorial departments, including (in recent years) regular sketches for the "Inside Cover" feature page. So my updated guess is "over 12000". Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 09:32, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Some two years later, it seems reasonable to update the estimate by adding the conservative figure of 1200 sketches, making the guess 13,200 as of the present date. Bjenks (talk) 08:08, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Inconsistency
editIn sectionising the article, I noticed a slight inconsistency over the year Alston joined The West—given as 1986 in the lede and 1985 in the (now) Biography section. Unfortunately, the lede citation vaguely indicates 1990 [fifteen years before 2005] as a promotion date. Therefore, I have taken the liberty of altering the wording to agree with the probability that he was employed in 1985 and took over the top cartooning job the following year. Not a big deal, but better to look consistent until we get proper verification. Bjenks (talk) 08:08, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
