"most wins in cycling history" doesn't stand to scrutiny edit

On his personal web page, Phinney claims to have won 328 races, and specifically says that this is more than the number won by Greg Lemond or Lance Armstrong. He doesn't provide evidence to back this number, but it looks shaky at best. Considering the Palmares compiled at cyclebase.nl, for example, Phinney has only about 67 "wins," including some very minor races (9th place finish in the 1993 Norwest Cycling Cup) and "wins" like finishing in 153rd place in the 1990 Tour de France. I can't imagine what he pads the record with to reach 328 wins.

In an apples-to-apples comparison, cyclebase.nl lists something like 150 victories for Greg Lemond and over 200 victories for Lance Armstrong. Phinney was a great rider, but let's not let him exaggerate his success. Uucp (talk) 13:30, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
