He taught William MacTaggart, not William McTaggart, the latter’s grandson. The younger MacTaggart spelt his name like that because his father preferred the longer spelling of Mc, but the spelling difference notwithstanding the two celebrated M(a)cTaggarts were grandfather and grandson.
