Gray was a minor man of letters and a friend of the Irish writers LORD DUNSANY (who dedicated a book of Jorkens stories to him; they agreed in denouncing Irish wartime neutrality) and EDITH SOMERVILLE (see Gifford Lewis EDITH SOMERVILLE (dUBLIN, 2004). Gray was a spiritualist who held seances with the medium Geraldine Cummins (biographer of Edith Somerville) and included the advice gained by this means (allegedly from figures including AJ Balfour and FD Roosevelt's mother Sarah) in letters to the President. most Irish historians have portrayed Gray as a marginal eccentric; some, including Brian Girvin in his book THE EMERGENCY argue that despite his oddities Gray faithfully represented American policy and that denunciations of him deflect attention from the divide between Irish and American attitudes during the Second World War. As a result of his Irish experiences Gray became a vocal advocate of Ulster Unionism.
