It has been suggested that this is NOT a photo of David Coombe - see http://www.middlemiss.org/lit/bookcovers/ivanov.jpg for an early-mid-1980s photo - Personally, I can't be sure. He was known for his curly hair, but conversely, who else could it be in the group photo that this image was cropped from?

I'm not bothering to identify the comments' authors. The photo in question is my photo, and it's definitely of David Combe. Yes, it's a very old one and not in keeping with his new jetset image. So very sorry, everyone. My own documentation has turned up and proved me wrong. I had to dig out my old neg and closely research the photo for republication purposes. It was taken on the evening of 5 September 1978 at a BBQ in Pam Buchanan's backyard. The gent at right in the group photo here is actually not Combe but Stewart West MHR. Lashings of humble pie. Citations removed

In vetting and cleaning up the article's citations, I decided to remove the following:

(1) Simmonds, Diane. Simon Gilbert opens on Saturday, 19 Nov 2004, mudgee.yourguide.com.au. Cached at cache.zoominfo.com. Retrieved on 2009-09-01. It includes only this on the subject--The cellar door will be officially opened at 3pm by chairman of the company, David Combe, past president of the Labor Party during the Hawke years. COMMENT: Combe was never the president and was banished in 1983, the very beginning of the Hawke years (1983-1991). Anyway, the opening of a cellar door function is rather non-notable, eh?

(2) Even the most superficial analysis of the [Combe-Ivanov] affair indicates that it was used as an excuse for many other issues occurring at the time.[Footnote:] For example a search on "David Combe" of the National Library of Australia's archives returns 16 political cartoons, and 7 other references, suggesting Bob Hawke and Mick Young, amongst others, played a significant role in Combe's "Fall from grace". Further, Chapter 10 of Frank Cain's "unofficial history" of ASIO is highly critical of ASIO's treatment of Combe. COMMENT: This puffy innuendo does not rate as a genuine citation. As a footnote, it serves merely to supplement the foregoing POV statement, which I've also removed.

(3) Webb, C. Why less wine is grape news The Age, 25 Mar 2007.
and (4) Simon Gilbert Wines Ltd (SGV), Company information at delisted.com.au. COMMENT: These are two of three citations give for Combe's departure from Simon Gilbert Wines. The third is an authoritative board statement from that company (albeit a PDF). The last is surely the only one needed, especially when the others are 99% irrelevant to Combe. Incidentally, I also think too many citations are hung on the relatively trivial monograph from the National Portrait Gallery--but that can wait for another day.
