Digital infrastructure vs Data infrastructure edit

So I just created Category:Digital infrastructure (pls help out with it!) and am wondering what the difference between digital infrastructure and data infrastructure might be.

Is data infrastructure a subtype of digital infrastructure? Should the article maybe be moved to Digital infrastructure? Should a new article Digital infrastructure be created alongside it?

Some points:

  • TechoPedia defines data infrastructure like so: "A data infrastructure can be thought of as a digital infrastructure that is known for promoting data consumption and sharing" which sounds like it's a subtype. Note that if it's a subtype the page could still be merged into a "Data infrastructure" section of a Digital infrastructure article.
  • The term Digital infrastructure makes sense in that it's the infrastructure for the Digital economy (and digital society - Information society probably being the closest article)

Is any of this different from information infrastructure? I think we need some secondary sources that define this term, because the current sources are a hodgepodge... --Joy [shallot] (talk) 12:54, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Suggested source / edits edit

We've recently published an open access article on "data infrastructure literacy" in Big Data & Society which might be useful as a source for this page. The article can be found here (under a CC-BY license): https://doi.org/10.1177/2053951718786316

Here is the full reference that could be added to the reference section:

Gray, Jonathan; Gerlitz, Carolin; Bounegru, Liliana (July 10, 2018). "Data infrastructure literacy". Big Data & Society. 5 (2): 1–13. doi:10.1177/2053951718786316.

In particular the article might serve as a source for:

  • Providing a quote to illustrate how data infrastructures can be understood, e.g.: "data infrastructures are comprised of shifting relations of databases, software, standards, classification systems, procedures, committees, processes, coordinates, user interface components and many other elements which are involved in the making and use of data" (p.3)
  • Discussing the relationship between "data infrastructure" and "information infrastructure" (as mentioned above on the talk page), emphasising how recent research on "data infrastructures" may draw on previous research on "information infrastructures" and "knowledge infrastructures".

Of the four required pieces of information for an edit request to be reviewed, your request is missing two of them: B and D, shown below:

Example edit request: "Please change A to B using C placed at D."
A B C D
A verbatim description of the old text coming out of the article (if any). A verbatim description of the new text going into the article (if any). A reference which verifies the requested change. The exact location in the article where B and C are to be placed.
  • B: The request does not specify the verbatim text which should be added to the article. Instead, the request offers a suggestion for how parts of that text might appear but does not otherwise propose a complete sentence.
  • D: The request does not specify where in the current article the claim statement and reference should be placed.

Kindly open a new edit request at your earliest convenience when the missing pieces of information are ready to be submitted.
