Data Center Infrastructure Management - Recent Editions

edit

MARCH-2015: I would like to propose that a group of vested parties COMPLETELY re-write this article, starting with an outline, coming to an agreement, and then filling the factual details in. Thoughts? respond back here if you'd like to participate. Vendor-neutral, factual content will be the resulting work. -mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.110.155.90 (talk) 18:48, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

(This section copied from User talk:CliffC}

I noticed you made a number of changes to the Data center infrastructure management page. Couple questions - it says capitalization is allowed for acronyms etc. which is why I put it there; most users do not want to type the full name into a search engine and we want the page to be returned on a search engine if "DCIM" is entered. Also,you removed the "list of notable vendors". While your reason is that Wikipedia is "not a directory", the majority of other product pages lists notable manufacturers and vendors, for instance the page for Laptop Computers. If indeed I am still unauthorized to have this list, how can I insert a list of major companies creating the product without breaching Wikipedia's rules? Thank you. I've copied this section to Talk:Data center infrastructure management where it can be seen by any interested parties; I'll try to answer your questions tomorrow if no one beats me to it. --CliffC (talk) 02:28, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nlyte.Software, your argument that other articles have vendor lists, so a "list of notable vendors" should be included here, is known as WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS and is never a valid one. Again, Wikipedia is not a directory – such lists can never be complete and are magnets for spam and conflicts over whether a particular vendor is 'notable' (although notability is generally agreed to mean 'having an article in Wikipedia').

I think you are making a major mistake in your approach to the encyclopedia. Based on the above post, your removal here and here of a legitimate redirect to a long-standing instance of DCIM, and on edit summaries such as "Search function won't return this page if abbreviation is entered; adding the abbreviation within the title may fix this problem" when experimenting with various titles for the article, your goal is to optimize the article to rank high on search-engine hit lists for "DCIM", with an eventual goal of driving business to nlyte.com, the website of nlite Software. Site nlyte.com states, "nlyte Software (formerly Global DataCenter Management) is a leading provider of data center infrastructure management (DCIM) solutions."

Article Wikipedia:Search engine optimization offers very clear advice to editors seeking to promote the popularity of their site. I also suggest you review the conflict of interest warning on your talk page before making any further article edits. --CliffC (talk) 13:40, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Evolution of tools

edit

I was intending to prune the market talk from the Evolution of tools section ("evolution" is a sure sign of the marketing department). However, I'm not sure if there is anything worth keeping. Like all good market spin, there seems to be some content in the section, but I can't quite make out what it is. Can anyone identify some encyclopedic information that is worth saving from this section, or should the whole thing be removed? Johnuniq (talk) 04:30, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Contesting due to not being sure if WP:NCCAPS applies to this move or not. Steel1943 (talk) 19:37, 26 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: See this link from Forrester where the term is not capitalized. Wikipedia tends to lower-case these things unless it is widely understood to be a proper name. I would still agree that DCIM is a proper abbreviation for the concept. The article itself seems to contain excessive capitalization such as Capacity Planning (see our article called Capacity planning, which uses lower case) and Asset Lifecycle Management. Compare our article on Enterprise content management which has a lower-case title. Data center predictive modeling has a lower-case title. EdJohnston (talk) 19:48, 26 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose per EdJohnston. Steel1943 (talk) 20:22, 26 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: from the references in the article it seems that only niche press, which are known for their love for using neologisms and capitalising everything, and thus are not usable for naming discussions. More reliable sources (Gartner, eWeek, Forrester, etc.) prefer lower case, which is what we should stick with. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 15:41, 27 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Phrases like "optimization of performance", "resource utilization" and "optimal solutions" occur way to much in this article. It reads like one of those technology paper written by a technology company in that field, full of advertisements for that specific company's technology. Except this article lacks all of those specific advertisements, and therefore ends up being very vague. 180.43.8.247 (talk) 06:22, 27 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
