Is this page needed? edit

I'm one of the founding Ubuntu developers. As an Ubuntu developer, I'm gratified to see so much enthusiasm; but as a Wikipedian I do question whether this page is needed.

I did a bunch of editing on this page for spelling, grammar, style, and accuracy; there's still rather a lot to do. When I got to it, there were some things that were outright wrong: the author had evidently misinterpreted some preliminary design documents from the Ubuntu Wiki as definitive statements of features that were to be added to Ubuntu 6.04, and enthusiastically put them in "Big News". Looking down the list of "Big News" and improvements, not all the items are immediately familiar to me, and I'd have to check to make sure that they really are going to land; furthermore I'm pretty sure that there are other more interesting and important changes that have been omitted. However, is it really worth my while doing this? There's a perfectly good Ubuntu wiki and huge quantities of more up-to-date and accurate information there; surely it would be better to have general information here, and refer to the Ubuntu wiki for detailed development information that doesn't have so much general interest to Wikipedia readers. At present we run the risk of misleading.

Also, from an encyclopaedic point of view, I'm not convinced that a single unreleased version of an operating system merits a top-level wiki page. Then again, I guess there are Wikipedia pages for several versions of Microsoft Windows, so maybe I'm wrong. Even so, it should be renamed to at least have "Ubuntu" in the page name. At present, I think we would be better off reducing this page to a set of links and folding it into the main Ubuntu page.

Major Release? edit

In reply to the above comment... From the buzz going around, it sounds like support for Dapper Drake will be for 3-5 years instead of the usual 18 months. This sounds like a significant release (such as Windows 98 vs. Windows 98 service pack 2). Otherwise, yes, this page may not have merit. And even if, I agree with having Ubuntu in the title.
