There is a story still apparently current in the House of Lords that the authorities there were very slow in paying for the two huge Nelson and Waterloo decorations, and that Maclise enlisted Dickens's help in trying to get them to settle. Whether or not this is true, one version has the name of the relevant official as "Sir William Sykes" or "Bill Sikes" (!). Since Dickens's character was created nearly two decades before the paintings it would be nice to have further light thrown on this aspect of the commission.
