Recent deaths

Not sure how to add this in the context of a general encyclopedia article, but the zoo has had three notable animal deaths since September 2007 when Hildy, a 33-year-old reticulated giraffe died. She was, at the time, the oldest giraffe in captivity. Boris, an African lion, died on April 2 at the age of 17. KeKe, a 39-year-old African elephant was euthanized on May 12 (Dallas Morning News link). --Dystopos (talk) 22:47, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Statue Caption

I've changed the wording on the caption for the photo. I have personally seen both the Sam Houston statue on Hunstville, TX and the giraffe at the zoo, so when I saw "it is the tallest in Texas," I thought, "surely it simply the tallest giraffe statue in Texas. Nope, it's talleraammmmmmmmmmkkkkkkkkkkkknches! I found the info with a quick google search: http://talesfromtheroad.southernliving.com/tales_from_the_road/2008/06/the-five-talles.html

Assessment

This article is pretty close to being B-class. I have the following suggestions in addition to edits that I have just made.

• In ZooNorth, what does "within recent years" mean. Recent is not recent for very long, so we need some actual dates (for instance, "between 2006 and 2010" or whatever).
• We really should find some place for the "trivia" items. Lists of random facts are generally dscouraged. I haven't really figured out where yet though.
• I think it needs a bit more about the aquarium. Eventually that could work into a separate article, but just a section under exhibits would probably do for now.

That is great news! I will address those suggestions.

• The "within recent years" in ZooNorth has been in the article a very long time so that is old news, no doubt. I have no idea when those particular exhibits opened so I will do the research and then replace "within recent years" with an actual year(s). If I can't find years I will just blend it in.
• Trivia...that is going to be kind of tricky to work those facts in elsewhere. I figured since they were backed up with a cited source that it would be acceptable. Could an exception possibly be made for Trivia sections IF indeed they do cite sources?
• Now, the aquarium was mentioned in the article before I came along. This is just my opinion but I don't like it for the article precisely for the reason you mentioned. I have not been able to find any information to connect the two separate facilities other than they are managed by the DZS and the aquarium's website link on the Dallas Zoo's website. That's it. No history in relation to the zoo. No details. What do you think? Should we omit it all together?

I can't find much about the aquarium either. I'm going to go ahead and rate this as B. If we can find anything significant, we can decide whether to start a whole new article or just include the information here. Don Lammers (talk) 18:39, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
