Ballast

edit

who would use wood as ballast? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.193.226.225 (talk) 00:58, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's a dense wood, but the context is confusing. "Even" makes it sound like the following words are going to be something reinforcing the idea of the wood's value, but ballast is certainly not valuable (except when you use cargo as ballast). Sentence Structure Confusing

edit

"African Blackwood is no longer regarded as ebony, a name now reserved for a limited number of timbers yielded by the genus Diospyros; these are more of a matte appearance and are more brittle." Which is more brittle, the Blackwood or the ebony?24.83.148.131 (talk) 15:23, 20 May 2009 (UTC)BeeCierReply

Capitals

edit

Sometimes the name is spelt upper-case, sometimes lower. Tree names and wood types don't generally get capitalized, as far as I know. "...pipe makers used old discarded Blackwood ballast to great effect. The German knife company Wusthof has also begun to sell a series of knives with blackwood handles...
