Notability Guidelines for Daehyun Elementary School

Hi Eeekster,

Just wondering why the warning about notability was added to the top of this article I created: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daehyun_Elementary_School

The article contains many 3rd party sources and was approved by other Wikipedia editors. Can you please tell me what else I can do to demonstrate notability? If the issue is about the majority of references being in Korean, I can assure you that it is very difficult to find English sources for elementary schools in Korea. The Korean sources I've cited are from reliable, local news agencies. To quote the "Wikipedia:Verifiability" article for citing sources:

"Because this is the English Wikipedia, English-language sources are preferred over non-English ones, assuming English sources of equal quality and relevance are available."

Since non-English sources are the only sources available, it seems as though the ones I've provided should be sufficient. Additionally, the "Wikipedia:Reliable sources" states:

"Verifiable sources may have technical or personal restrictions (written in languages other than English, on websites that require a certain software, available on a type of media that requires the reader to have a certain type of technological appliance to access it)

The costs or difficulties of verifying a source do not impact on its reliability, as long as it can be verified in a reasonable time frame by someone.

Where a source is difficult to verify, or in a language other than English, many editors appreciate the courtesy of supplying the relevant paragraph and ensuring it can be read by English language readers. When sources of equal quality are available the ease of access may be preferred, but if sources of higher quality are difficult to verify, that difficulty alone is not a reason to disregard such sources or replace them with lower-quality ones."

I did a quick search to find other articles about elementary schools to see how they were cited, and ended up with countless examples that had exactly zero references for their Wikipedia articles and these pages have been around for years. Most of these pages just listed their school's official website (which I have also done with the page for Daehyun).

I appreciate your help with this. I would hate to see the article get deleted. My students worked very hard to research their school and translate the information to English. Thank you for your time.

Hi Rystheguy!

This essay discusses some "common outcomes" for elementary schools when they are nominated for deletion. Generally elementary schools do not pass Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for "notability", and are often "re-directed" to the place they are located in or their school district.

There are exceptions. Some elementary schools are notable in their own right. For example:

• Tharwa Primary School (I nominated this school for deletion.[[File:|25px|link=]])
• Rochelle School of the Arts (It appears to be a Kinder to Grade 8 school, but that's not reflected in the article at present.)

Thank you for your quick response, Peter. I'm curious about what defines a school as primary or secondary. Daehyun Elementary School is also used as a high-school academy after regular classes are finished. Additionally, high school students receive credit by being involved in a mentoring program at our school where they work with young students during regular school hours. Would including this information in the article help to establish sufficient notability? The Rochelle School of the Arts that you mentioned, seems only minorly notable, but because it teaches students until the 8th grade, that minor notability is sufficient? Because the Wikipedia:Notability (high schools) article seems to say that age range or grades taught are not enough to establish the school as a secondary school. If I understand correctly, the criteria for being considered a secondary school is that the school must provide certification that education at the secondary level has been acquired. If that's the case, I believe that Daehyun could be considered a secondary institution, even if it's not the primary use of the school. Rystheguy (talk) 02:53, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

I've added the information about Daehyun being used as a high school academy. I've also updated the article to include more information about the baseball. Being the only school in Ulsan that has an official team seems notable. Especially since students come from outside of the city to attend, and it's the only option for students in the city who want to make playing baseball a career. I also found a professional baseball player who attended Daehyun and added that information to the "Notable people" section of the article. Rystheguy (talk) 07:01, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
