Contested deletion edit
This page should not be speedily deleted because the subject is very serious and ignored by this Wikipedia. Similar articles exist in other Wikipedias - especially in German one. I quote reliable sources, including two German academicians. The text should be corrected and discussed, but not speedy deleted by an expert in Emirates. Xx236 (talk) 10:46, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
DDR edit
I understand the name, but many readers will probably not. Perhaps GDR? The basic problem is name East Germany. The term has many meanings, see de:Ostdeutschland. Xx236 (talk) 08:26, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Xx236: I don't see a problem with "East Germany" as the name of the country, as - at least in English - that's the WP:COMMONNAME (as opposed to West Germany), while the other meanings attached to it in German don't register much, if at all. But as an article title there would certainly be a problem with (e.g.) "East German German", or "German language of East Germany". I'm not sure how to calibrate the recognisability of GDR against DDR: I used the latter because I recognise it, but don't immediately recognise GDR. However, the article on East Germany uses GDR much more than DDR, so GDR seems to be the preferable wiki term, so if you want to change this article title to "GDR German" you're right that there's an argument for doing so. - @Ingratis: I'm not a fan of having East German or East Germany in the title because that could cause some issues. Perhaps we could go with GDR instead. The title of the German article translates to "Use of language in the GDR", but I don't think that would work here. The title of the French article translates to "German language in the German Democratic Republic", I guess something like that could work, maybe "German language in the GDR". The title of the Russian article translates to "German in the GDR", that could work as well. --YoungstownToast (talk) 20:29, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Source of translation edit
Since a couple of editors in good faith have mistakenly "corrected" the "translated from" tag, I'd like to note here that I translated the lede of the article from the equivalent on the French Wikipedia, not the German Wikipedia. The two are quite similar, but the French article is far better referenced (unexpected, since this deals with a German language subject, but true nevertheless), so I chose to translate that one. There is no reason at all why someone should not add content from the German Wikipedia as long as they can source it properly. Ingratis (talk) 10:38, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
