Malkovich edit

NBC, the supposed source of John Malkovich being a star, hasn't issued a press release about the series since May 14, 2012. This whole thing looks like a media circular feeding frenzy.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 21:54, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Re-added John Malkovich info with better source. Variety is considered a reliable source for entertainment news.— Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib), 11:47, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Serious anachronisms edit

In the first episode, no more than 5 minutes in, there are major problems: calling larboard "port", high charged ships, schooners, and using a pendulum clock to determine longitude. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.55.186.221 (talk) 02:18, 26 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Plot is rubbish edit

Aside from the actual narrative quote from the pilot, the "Plot" section is completely wrong. People have been throwing about the "New Providence in the Bahamas" line willy-nilly, but it is not supported by the programme itself (it was a haven for pirates, but it is not depicted as the island where the main action takes place). According to dialogue, the Commodore's island republic is on the fictional Santa Campana off the coast of Cuba (there are no islands with Spanish names in the Bahamas, which was settled by the Dutch and taken by the British). The show does not take place "during the War of Spanish Succession"; that war ended in 1714, the same year the show's fictional Blackbeard was supposedly killed by the Royal Navy off the Carolinas (he was historically killed under those circumstances in 1718). The pilot for this series clearly states that it is set 15 years after Blackbeard's apparent death, in 1729. Can someone correct it, please? 12.233.147.42 (talk) 22:59, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Possible replacement:

In 1729, William Jagger, Governor of Jamaica, receives evidence that Blackbeard, believed killed off the Carolinas in 1714, is alive and in hiding. Fearing that Blackbeard will unleash a new reign of terror in the Caribbean, Jagger conceives a plan to reveal the pirate's location. He leaks information that he is shipping a navigational chronometer to England; such a device would be irresistible bait for Blackbeard. Jagger conscripts Tom Lowe, a spy and surgeon who served the British Crown in the Jacobite Rebellion, to travel with the chronometer and allow himself to be captured and taken to Blackbeard's hidden stronghold. Once there, Lowe is to assassinate Blackbeard.

Taken by the pirates to the hidden island of Santa Campana, Lowe is released due to his medical skills. He finds the notorious pirate living under the assumed identity of "the Commodore", but his true identity is an open secret. Lowe quickly comes to respect the Commodore's experimental utopia, nominally a free republic ruled by majority vote in which all participants are equal under the law. Lowe soon realizes that the Commodore is mentally unstable; just as ruthless as in his heyday, the Commodore will never allow Santa Campana to be anything other than a dictatorship under his veiled control.

Lowe works to gain the Commodore's trust while waiting for an opportunity to strike. He falls in love with the wife of a crippled Jacobite rebel who has taken refuge on the island. Lowe realizes that Jagger is deceitful, unethical, and just as ruthless as Blackbeard. Lowe must decide which master to serve, or to serve his own interests in this new society.
