Huh?

"His father, who was married to someone else, died when Cory was a small child, leaving his mother to struggle financially until she eventually remarried." This is a very confusing sentence. Was his father married to his mother when he was born? Was his father divorced from his mother when he died? Were his father and mother ever married?
