Note there is also a page on the Dutch Wikipedia http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelis_Vermuyden which provides more information on this subject. John a s (talk) 17:52, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Involvement with Fens in 1630s

edit

This article states "Contrary to popular belief, Vermuyden was not involved with the draining of the Great Fen in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk in the 1630s". The http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelis_Vermuyden article (which I viewed in English using Chrome) says "His greatest fame Vermuyden However, with the draining of the Fens (also: "Great Fen", now "Bedford Level"), a peat bog in East Anglia to The Wash between King's Lynn , Cambridge and Lincoln as big as the provinces of Holland and Zeeland . Under his leadership created an extensive system of drainage channels, drains and locks . The operation was in 1637 completed". Assuming the English article is correct I guess the Dutch article should be corrected, what is the best reference to be raised on the corresponding Talk page? • I would not necessarily assume the English article is correct. The best course of action would be to check the references, for example the biography by Korthals-Altes (which according to the Dutch article exists in both Dutch and English, and in fact most likely was originally written in Dutch.) Wasterdyk

edit

Someone gave Vermuyden the middle name of Wasterdyk. Is this genuine? I can't find any mention of it in the book by Harris, or in the ODNB entry. I will leave it here until someone can come up with a reliable source. Southdevonian (talk) 12:38, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Someone restored the name and said it came from this website http://www.geni.com/people/Sir-Cornelius-Vermuyden/6000000013624995204. However this is not a reliable source and in any case simply copies the Wiki article. What is needed is a reliable published source that does not just copy the Wiki entry. Portrait image not Vermuyden

edit

I think the image of the portrait may need to be removed. It is not of Vermuyden, but of Philibert Vernatti (who worked with him on land reclamation). See here: https://rkd.nl/en/explore/images/record?query=vernatti&start=7. Glainneidr (talk) 11:36, 3 February 2020 (UTC)GlainneidrReply
