Cordyline sturmeii

@Peter coxhead:, the reason I added Cordyline sturmeii to the list and wikilinked Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Sturm was for the latter article to no longer be an orphan. I can't quite follow your edit summary (mostly because I'm not a botanist, I suppose), and have no idea how I would usefully add Sturm to the C. australis entry. Would you mind doing so? Cordyline sturmii (no "e" according to the IPNI entry) is now considered only to be a synonym of C. australis, i.e. it's not a different species, so the name C. sturmii is no longer used. Hence without distorting the list for one special case, it's not possible to do what you want. We don't add all the known synonyms for every species, linking to a person if they were named after them, so why do that here for just one synonym? (C. australis has at least 7 synonyms.)

(Another plant which looks to honour Sturm is Calceolaria sturmii Colenso, but that too is only a synonym now, unfortunately. It's possible that some of the plants listed here are named after him and are still accepted as species, but "Sturm" is not an uncommon name, so it would be necessary to find out whether he was the person intended.) But how would you add him? All I can see is that you would have to add that one synonym of Cordyline autralis is Cordyline sturmii which is named after Friedrich Sturm. But how can this be justified? Peter coxhead (talk) 17:00, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

I see that in the first paragraph of section Taxonomy and names, the first paragraph discusses the plant's discovery and a couple of names. I have no idea how many synonyms there are, but if it goes somewhere, it would go there. "William Colenso named after him a species of cabbage-tree, Cordyline sturmeii, which Sturm had discovered and raised in his nursery" is what it says in Sturm's biography. As long as you have reliable sources (which in this case, we do), why would you not discuss the various synonyms right there? Schwede66 17:49, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

There are at least 7 synonyms. You want one to be discussed just to get a link to Sturm, which seems unreasonable to me.

Sturm's biography wasn't written by a botanist and isn't accurate. An accurate statement would be something like "Colenso thought that plants Sturm raised in his nursery were a new species of Cordyline, and named it C. sturmii after him. However, this species was not accepted and is now regarded as a superfluous name for C. australis."

I'm quite convinced that Sturm is sufficiently notable for an article, but not that this is a sensible way to de-orphan it. Peter coxhead (talk) 20:50, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
