Distribution? edit

"Old World" is pretty vague geographically: where do rollers actually occur? )I know there are more details under individual species, but I think a general summary/map would be helpful here too.) 86.132.142.153 (talk) 16:21, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Moved, as proposed, except that the article on the bird is moved to Coraciidae. BD2412 T 18:45, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

– "Roller" has several general uses, and I'm not sure that the bird is the primary topic for the term. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:40, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose I don't think that "I'm not sure" is the most convincing rationale for moving a page that has lots of links to it, including all the species in the family, especially when there is no obvious better candidate to be the title article for roller. Seems to me to be a move for the sake of it Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:03, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Let me put it another way: in order to occupy the base name, a topic must be the clear primary topic. The bird is not the clear primary topic. (And tidying up links is not a reason to not do something). Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:46, 8 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Jimfbleak, do you want to justify your oppose given evidence of no primary from the the pageview tool? In ictu oculi (talk) 13:23, 8 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support the second move, but move Roller to Coraciidae: There are lots of devices known as "rollers", as well as various other meanings, so placing the dab page at the base name makes sense. But for the bird, the suggested title is ambiguous with Roller (pigeon). —BarrelProof (talk) 19:21, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Strong support per WP:ASTONISH and WP:NOPRIMARY, page views alone show that Coraciidae are not the 60% subject for roller. In ictu oculi (talk) 13:21, 8 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support the views provided by IIO show that this barely gets more views than the others titled "Roller" (it could easily be less if other topics were included) and the next highest viewed gets over a third of the views. By PT#2 and ASTONISH I'm pretty sure the machinery would be primary if anything. Google and Images also show things for companies and roller skates but nothing for the bird. • Question: is there a protocol to change existing hyperlinks all at once? While I admit to the logic of the move, there really are a LOT of links (appears to be over 100 of them, not counting redirects) that would need to be changed, and doing so manually will mean an inordinate amount of editing. If the process can be automated, then I would support BarrelProof's suggestion of changing the links to the bird "Roller" (and also Roller (bird)) to "Coraciidae". If not, I'd probably oppose. Dyanega (talk) 18:42, 10 March 2020 (UTC) - P.S. - there are 31 pages that link to the existing "Roller (disambiguation)" article, and 216 that link to "Roller" for the bird. Is it really the page traffic that determines what is primary versus secondary, and not the number of links to other articles? Dyanega (talk) 21:26, 10 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • I have seen it happen, but I don't know how to do it. —BarrelProof (talk) 03:52, 11 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. There is no way on earth that the bird is the primary topic for this common word. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:41, 11 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per WP:TITLECHANGES (don’t change titles without a good reason). If the nom can’t be bothered to present a cogent argument for their proposal, it should be opposed on principle. “I’m not sure”??? That’s it? Ridiculous, disrespectful and a waste of time. We need a good reason to change this title, and I see no compelling argument for it not being the primary topic. What other topic are people searching with “roller” going to be seeking? How likely are those other uses to be sought with this term? None of this is addressed by the nom or Support. —В²C 07:04, 15 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Strong support to move Roller to Coraciidae, and Roller (disambiguation)Roller. While I acknowledge that changing the links from other articles will be time consuming, the page views support the contention that the bird (well, actually one of the two types of birds) is not the primary topic. Therefore, as per WP:ASTONISH and WP:NOPRIMARY, this is not an arbitrary desire but a needed change. Loopy30 (talk) 13:03, 15 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • What page views? Nobody has provided any link so no way to evaluate what anyone is claiming they’re looking at. —-В²C 16:40, 15 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
      • The link to the page views was provided by user:In ictu oculi in their response to the first oppose at the top of the page. Loopy30 (talk) 19:36, 15 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
        • Thank you. I missed that. But it supports PT. It's clearly more likely than any other topic to be sought, and 2000 views for it out of 3700 total for all, including the dab page, makes it "more likely than all the others combined" to be the topic being sought. It's certainly doesn't warrant overriding title changes. --В²C 20:46, 15 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
          • @Born2cycle: when you look at all the views[[1]] rather than just those with a qualifier you can see that while the bird gets 2,060, Rolling (metalworking) gets 8,965, Road roller (which the article says is sometimes just "roller") gets 5,285, Steamroller gets 2,847 and Bay City Rollers (which is presumably sometimes called just "Rollers") gets 21,916. And also my Google searches are also surely good evidence, in addition site:wikipedia.org Roller returns the DAB page, then the agricultural tool, then the BEAM, and then the current "Roller" article, in fact previously I went through 20 pages of results and didn't find it and then re searched and it came up as noted 4th. And I don't think TITLECHANGES applies here since I still don't think this is controversial enough for that to apply but I would suggest even you would now agree with the move? Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:34, 16 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support RollerCoraciidae and Roller (disambiguation)Roller. I'm no fan of page views, but in any case I can see no possible case that the primary topic of roller is these birds (of course I'm no fan of primary topic either but this case seems uncontroversial to me). Andrewa (talk) 17:53, 15 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support RollerCoraciidae and Roller (disambiguation)Roller. Per WP:AT criteria: Coraciidae is the most PRECISE and NATURAL title for the bird family. Animal families are most CONSISTENTly titled by the scientific name. CONCISE is a wash. A vernacular name such as roller may be more RECOGNIZABLE than a scientific name, but if roller was widely recognized as a term referring to a type of bird, I don't think this discussion would have gotten started in the first place.
