Go Ask Alice

edit

In the novel "Go Ask Alice" the protagonist went to Coos Bay and lived there for a while after she ran away from home. I don't know if this is worthwhile to include in the article so I'll let you guys decide that. The Wiki page on Go Ask Alice novel has more information about Coos Bay mention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.110.228.40 (talk) 21:54, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ken Keyes, Jr.

edit

I don't know how notable this is but Ken_Keyes_Jr., of "Handbook to Higher Consciousness" fame, had his training headquarters in Coos Bay from 1982 to 1990.

Egyptian Theatre

edit

When the Egyptian Theatre reopens we need to tie a link to Egyptian Theatre 12.145.73.51 18:31, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Looks like they're showing (classic) movies again. [1] Because of the theatre organ, it might merit its own article: Egyptian Theatre (Coos Bay, Oregon). Is there any current info on ownership and restoration? Katr67 18:58, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't have all the details, but I believe it is owned by the City of Coos Bay and managed by a community organization. If anyone has access to The World Newspaper articles (Coos Bay's paper) over the last year they could get a lot of info.Theophilus75 05:31, 24 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Intro

edit

I believe the intro is missing two important points: (1) Coos Bay is the biggest city (or metro area?) on the Oregon Coast, and (2) the New Carissa. Thoughts? -Pete 18:21, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey Pete. Can you reference the claim about Coos Bay being the biggest city/metropolitan area on the Oregon coast? Does OR have a state statistics bureau or something similar? The New Carissa has an FA article which is brilliant, but I agree something should be written about it in here with a link to the main article. Chrisfow 20:44, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
What would be needed to reference the claim of Coos Bay being the biggest city/metro area on the Oregon Coast? The statistical fact is that there is no other area on the Oregon Coast with that many people (the US Census should show this). A point of note that maybe could also be included is that Coos Bay (the actual waterway that Coos Bay sits on) is the largest port between San Francisco and Portland, and the largest ocean port between San Francisco and Seattle. Theophilus75 21:00, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I added it. Seems logical to state this and reference cited.--Adam00 (talk) 06:04, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Name Change/City Consolidation

edit

Coos Bay changed its name in 1944. It had previously been called Marshfield. In 1943 an election was held to consolidate Marshfield and the neighboring city of North Bend under the name "Coos Bay. The measure passed in Marshfield, but failed in North Bend. Following that election, Marshfield changed its name to Coos Bay. In 1965, the city of Empire voted to merge with Marshfield.

In 1987, another consolidation measure proposed that Coos Bay, North Bend and Eastside, a third neighboring city, should consolidate into a new city to be called Coos Bay. Again North Bend voted not to consolidate, but when Coos Bay and Eastside both voted to join, Eastside became a part of Coos Bay.

Considering that a large portion of the current city of Coos Bay is what used to be two other cities, I think it is worth noting those other two cities in the history section. If someone has more info on those original cities (Empire and Eastside) I wonder if it would warrant them having their own articles.

I'm still trying to figure out this wikipedia project thing. I'll look for info to verify what I seem to remember about the consolidatin and name change, but I guess I'm looking for a bit of guidance too. Theophilus75 20:57, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll check out all the former cities in Oregon Geographic Names and see what I can figure out. Having worked on articles about several of these consolidated cities (Lincoln City, Oregon for example), I'd say that the individual cities probably won't merit having their own articles unless someone is willing to do enough research to find more than a paragraph's worth of information on each one. I'll go ahead and add what I can today. If you find out more please add it too, and let me know if you need help with the citations. Katr67 22:10, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Need better reference

edit

Added cite tag, no reference of whom or what group stated this information in the reference information.

Sir Francis Drake is said[by whom?] to have sought shelter in the bay for his ship, the Golden Hind and her crew in 1579.[1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.41.164.58 (talk) 00:12, 14 June 2010

I added a reference to a published work which seems to satisfy the article's claim that he "is said to have...". Mind you, one could arguably say that the existing reference satisfied that claim too, since it also "said" it... :-) Interesting thing is, I'd never have even thought to do that if I hadn't been here anyway altering the column code to work in IE - funny how these things work out, isn't it ?  -  Begoon (talk) 16:11, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

References Added

edit

Someone put in the needed reference tag. I added about 3 or so which were as credible as I could find. I couldn't seem to locate a city parks and recreation site like many cities have, just the coosbay.org one. --Adam00 (talk) 06:05, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Japanese garden at Mingus Park is impressive and would be nice to have a photo or more information. Also, many area events could be added, such as festivals, or the Shore Acres Christmas lights, which draws thousands of tourists each year.--Adam00 (talk) 06:16, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The more I think of it, the more undeveloped this page is. There's nothing about Weyerhauser, which dramatically changed this community (now a casino). Or the museums, or myrtlewood factory. If no one does anything, I might add this when I get time. --Adam00 (talk) 06:22, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Added Other Racist History of CB, Jordan Cove Energy Project, and Recognition of Alonzo Tucker's Lynching sections.

edit

I have added the Other Racist History of CB, Jordan Cove Energy Project, and Recognition of Alonzo Tucker's Lynching sections because they are history that belongs here and I have cited them. You are free to add any bits of context you feel necessary, but please don't delete them. If you do, I have my edits saved on my computer and I will repost. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coosbay541 (talkcontribs) 00:10, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Coosbay541, Are you working on this for a school assignment or your work? Additionally the threat I have my edits saved on my computer and I will repost violates Wikipedia policy. You must gain consensus with other editors if your material is removed, not just "repost." KidAdSPEAK 00:38, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Why was this removed then? I cited all the material. You just want to erase it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coosbay541 (talkcontribs) 00:45, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Coosbay541, The material was removed because it was written poorly. It is not my responsibility to fix that for you. I encourage you to self-revert and take another look at your draft. If not, I will be forced to take you to WP:AN/3 for violating WP:3RR. KidAdSPEAK 00:48, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Fine, but could you give me any insight into how or where it was written poorly and allow my revision to be posted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coosbay541 (talkcontribs) 00:49, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

The sentence "It's also worth mentioning that in 1903, in the Coos Bay Public Schools, integration was attempted" is far too informal for Wikipedia. The heading Other Racist History is obviously problematic and "The murder went unsolved and the Coos Bay City Government has yet to acknowledge this racist killing" is not a sentence that should be said in WP:WIKIVOICE. Those are just a few examples. KidAdSPEAK 00:53, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

So would "In 1903, Coos Bay Public School District attempted integration" work instead? How is "Other Racist History" problematic when the history is inherently racist? Should it say "Racial" history? It absolutely is racist history and needs to be understood as such. Also the book I cited for such says the murder went unsolved, and the city government has never acknowledged it. SHould I say they didn't acknowledge the killing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coosbay541 (talkcontribs) 01:02, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Okay, now what's wrong with my latest version? Wordcounter.com says my writings were college graduate level, I fixed all grammar errors, I fixed citations, and everything is backed up. I even did the few suggested changes above. I'm starting to think you're enforcing pro-racist sentiment by removing, thereby erasing, this history... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coosbay541 (talkcontribs) 02:44, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Well, I have reposted my revision again. Every user who undid my revisions, with the exception of KidAd, refused to engage in any kind of extensive discussion about my revisions and I have requested dispute resolution on this. It's a shame people have to make Wikipedia this difficult for regular people to use, especially when i wasn't using it maliciously to begin with. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coosbay541 (talkcontribs) 03:21, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Coosbay541: I closed your DRN case as premature. But I would like to offer to help you here. The first two things I recommend you do is read WP:NPOV and WP:MOS The first section explains that, as an encyclopedia, we cannot have an opinion. We must present facts- not interpretation of them. The second essay is the Manual of Style- it will help you develop the "wikivoice"
Now- to specific problems with your addition- you have a conversational tone that would be good in journalism or an academic essay, but an encyclopedia is not like a conversation. Where your Composition professors and English teachers spend your entire educational career teaching you how to put your own personality into writing, here we want you to take it out. We want the facts, well written, but in a plain, simple style. How does this sound for the first paragraph:
22 years later, another black man, Timothy Pettis, was murdered. His killers were never charged despite a $600 reward. An autopsy demanded by the black community found that his testicles had been removed. The Ku Klux Klan had been experiencing a resurgence in the Marshfield area at this time [2]
The Coos Bay Public school an attempt at integration was thwarted in 1903 when three black children were refused admission by the principal. The school board suggested a separate room for the black children and the editor of New Age, a local paper, predicted taxpayers would not support the expense of a separate school. [3]
I would suggest calling the section just "Other Incidents" My reasoning is- the murder probably was racially motivated, I think that is an accurate and fair assumption, but since it was never solved- it is still just an assumption. Because this section follows a lynching incident- just titling it "Other Incidents" will indicate to the reader that they should be considered racially motivated. Also, the statement about the city never acknowledging this killing- its unclear the purpose of this statement. Do you mean they don't admit it happened? They don't admit it was racially motivated? What is the purpose of including this statement? It appears to only exist to shame the city, which is not our job as WP editors. So I removed it. Unless there are sources saying the city committed the murder- there is no point to including this statement.
Do you see the difference in what you wrote and what I wrote? Its not that your version is bad or wrong, just that its writing for a different purpose. It is writting meant to persuade or make a statement. Wikipedia should not do either of those things- WP exists to provide factual information only, and our articles should reflect that. Now- if you agree to my proposed changes- we will see if we can get a few other editors to agree and then add the changes to the article. But we have to get consensus first. THat doesn't mean every person has to agree- but it does mean that a (usually) a majority of editors agree that the changes are ready to be added. Nightenbelle (talk) 14:51, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

politics

edit

Didn't Coos Bay and the whole of the county vote for Donald Trump in 2016? This data is not given. Also, when will the 2020 census data be available?

Yes, it did. And the stats are on Wikipedia. LOL. Hey editors, you need to update this article. Coos Bay is NO LONGER a Democratic stronghold.

"Bare minimum"

edit

An editor deleted descriptive language on the section of our notable people. Rationale: "should have the bare minimum information to know who is referred to. Further detail lives on the bio page."

But as we all can plainly see, the small descriptive entry the editor deleted was far smaller that other entries on the list! Raising the question, why delete this entry? Did the editor like those entries better? It's very odd.

The descriptive entry was all RS supported. Unlike other entries. Makes it even odder.

And then you say, but I can't see the entry that was deleted. True. Someone hid it. Why?

And who hid it? They failed to leave a word here. Answering both those questions.

This, following as it does a third editor - editing the same series of entries - deleting reference to the person from the list of people with his surname because - can you believe it - he says (incorrectly) that on a list of names a reference is required (not so, and he could see there were none) .. it's all troubling. To me.

Perhaps we can get a seasoned editor, not with crossover edits with these editors, who can take a look at this? Where would I go to ask for that?--2603:7000:2143:8500:A45B:E4AA:91E9:A3F9 (talk) 06:25, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
