Is that simply a typo or some kind of political speak that this act was proposed in 1972 and passed in 1986 against the veto of President Reagan?Gallador (talk) 21:53, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

It is neither a typo nor some kind of political speak. The cited "Note" says: Rep. Ronald V Dellums introduced the first anti-apartheid legislation in 1972, and in 1986 his bill was finally passed, "sending a clear message to South Africa that American investment would be divested," Dellums recalls. Support for the Dellums bill was so strong that it withstood a veto by President Reagan, the first time in the 20th century that a president had a foreign policy veto overridden. The Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 imposed economic sanctions against South Africa, and listed five conditions for ending them, including release of Nelson Mandela and all political prisoners and agreement by the South African government to enter "good-faith negotiations" with the Black majority.

From the above, it would seem that the assessment which rates the article's importance as "low" might need to be revised upwards.---PJHaseldine (talk) 09:49, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Can the need for a citation be deleted since the need is obviated by Reagan's speech in Texas quoted in whole--or at least in part--a speech heavily quoted by the press at least in the US and probably world-wide. It seems the US was late in the anti-Apartheid game, but Congress must have known that every POTUS would veto such an Act as the one proposed in 1972 (and certainly thought of earlier. Certainly, most Congresses knew it would be hard to pass, but it would be interesting to see whether RR had the gonads to override the Act. He did, which said more about his politics than anything he said. He was pro-Apartheid, anti-Black, and a world-class bigot. 173.101.54.182 (talk) 02:58, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
