Suggestions edit

More about the Safari Golf Course should be added.

Here are some suggestions from the WP:ZOO project. Feel free to complete these and cross them off when complete. Be sure to document the edits here so a record can be kept. Polypmaster 03:09, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the main entrance
Description of exhibits: buildings, size, # of animals, key points of interest, etc.
More detailed history (e.g., why did it close in Oct 1905?)
Any research/conservation efforts they do there?
Any trams or trains or other rides?
References. Specifically the # of animals & species, and the history section. Any number has to come from somewhere

-I have been making a few changes about the collection. I work at the zoo and I wish for the information to be up-to-date. I do not have a username for Wikipedia. About not referencing the Southeast Asia animal collection, the website is wrong, we moved the whistling ducks and cattle egrets to the Roadhouse and one galah and two sulphur crested cockatoos were added. The kangaroo's quantity can't be referenced, since I already knew that. If you have any questions, please e-mail @ Asgard036@aol.com! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.31.186.106 (talk) 18:01, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

If it's all right with everyone else, I would like to change some of the information in this article. First reason, the Columbus Zoo changed it's website and all the reference links are not accessible. I also would like to add more pictures to make the article more aesthetically pleasing. I am going to reference my data, but some sources aren't on the internet, they are print material. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.31.186.106 (talk) 19:22, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

That is fine, but try not to change too much if possible. The information on the article should still be correct mostly, so try to find references that relate to what is there if possible. Adding info would be great though, since I have not had much time recently to add anything else. The article is a GA class, so it should be in good format and informational quality already. Pictures would be good, but be sure to only add your own pictures since I do not think the zoo will give you proper permission. I think all the pictures on the article currently are mine, but are before contruction completed. A new zoo entrance picture would be nice, along with some more animals. Thanks for your help. Polypmaster (talk) 11:47, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just got an update about Polar Frontier. This information is the final statistics of the exhibit. The new plans don not include reindeer and it includes the old church as a conservation/education building and a play area. This is print material so sourcing it wouldn't be much help but I'll try to find the construction company online and cite them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.5.253.85 (talk) 21:59, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Changed a few things about the collection - some species have been phased out or added. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.5.253.85 (talk) 15:38, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

-Whoever added the "not found in NZ/not found in Asia/not found in Australia" notes, I think these are extremely unnecessary. People can find out for themselves that they are not from that country and the Region is called Australia and the Islands. The Roadhouse building is not dedicated only to Australian and New Zealand species. Unless someone provides a counter-argument those notes should be deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.5.253.85 (talk) 17:13, 25 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

- Again, whoever keeps making changes to the Australia and Islands of Southeast Asia exhibits please stop because you are portraying INCORRECT information. I will expand the exhibit information to clarify the exhibits. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.5.253.85 (talk) 17:05, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Images edit

I added some generic animal images from Wikipedia so the page looks a little better. Once there are some images form the Columbus zoo specifically, feel free to replace them. Polypmaster 16:57, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think these are helpful. It isn't relevant to this article what a bison or sun bear look like; only what the Zoo itself looks like. More importantly, the use of the images in the article wrongly implies that they were taken at this zoo, which means they are providing incorrect as well as irrelevant information: elements of the animal habitats—at some other zoo—are visible in the backgrounds of the photos, and the individual animal specimens in particular may differ in some material way from those actually kept at this zoo. I'm going to remove them. Postdlf 01:05, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Polypmaster 13:39, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

unreferenced info edit

To the unregistered user who has recently edited the article: I am assuming you are a zoo employee or enthusiast, so thank you for correcting the info on Colo and otherwise. If you could, please reference your data, as the info I have gotten is older and contradictory to yours. That would be very helpful. Polypmaster 14:50, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

GA Review edit

I made a bunch of minor edits, basically just copyediting. A few small issues to take care of:

  • The zoo logo image needs a detailed fair-use rationale.
  • Please rephrase "Doing so creates a miniature Asia" in the Asia Quest subsection - this is embarrassingly worded.
  • Either all of the image captions should have periods, or none of them.
  • This is not necessary to pass GA, but it's worth noting that the reference style used here is nonstandard. Since all of your references are online, it would at least be useful to add access dates to these links, in case they go inactive.

GA is on hold pending changes. Chubbles 08:58, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Main Entrance edit

Since adding a picture of the main entrance was part of the criterion to get this article rated a GA rating, I think we need to put a picture of the main gate back in the article. The picture I took last year was of the old gate, and there is a brand new one now. If anyone here is going to the zoo soon, could you take a camera and get a good picture of the gate so that we can add that back? If I don't get a response soon I will add the old one back so that we can at least have some gate image. Polypmaster (talk) 23:11, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've been to the zoo a few times in the last couple months (nice and empty this time of year, no crowds), and have forgotten to take my camera each time... I'll probably be going again in another week or so, and will try to remember to take it with me... other than the front gate, are there any other pictures you want? I was thinking a shot of the shores building would also be cool, and the landmark reptile house... - Adolphus79 (talk) 04:34, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

GA Reassessment edit

This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Columbus Zoo and Aquarium/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

I am sure this article met the criteria in 2007. However, since then standards have risen considerable while the article has degraded in quality. Per the GAR instructions, I will only list the major problems, but there are a number of minor problems as well. I will give a week or two for serious effort to be made to fix the problems and then delist if needed. --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:22, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

History section edit

The history section is poor. It is too short for a long-standing highly notable zoo. There are large gaps in coverage and what is or is not included seems random. For example, the 1992 Giant Panda exhibit that attracted huge media attention, but was a financial failure and led to Jack Hanna "retiring" as director is not mentioned. The 2011 exotic animal release that ha very little to do with the zoo is mentioned, but there is very little on the zoo's expansion in the same time frame.

Other omissions edit

The golf course is mentioned via a single sentence in the lead only (a violation of WP:LEAD). It should have a brief summary ala The Wilds and Zoombezi Bay.

The article needs a response/reputation section. For an average zoo, that might not be a big deal, but for a zoo that bills itself as the nation's top zoo this is a big part of its notability and needs covered. (Again, mentioning it only in the lead is both insufficient & a violation of LEAD.

An economics/impact on the community section would be good to add, although perhaps not crucial.

Other lead problems edit

In addition to the material that appears only in the lead, mentioned above, the lead is not an adequate summary of the body of the article because it does not cover history at all. Half the lead is referenced and half unreferenced; references are optional as long as the lead is a proper summary of the body, but whichever style (refs/no refs) is chosen it should be consistently.

Sourcing edit

The article has very little independent sourcing. There are some sections unreferenced and the majority of the referenced material is to Columbus Zoo literature. That might be OK for straight-forward descriptions of exhibits, but sourcing statements such as "The Columbus Zoo has become a leader in breeding gorillas" to Zoo literature creates a neutrality problem.

Additionally, all the references on "current" exhibits date to 2006/7. As anyone familiar with the zoo would know, things have changed considerably in the last 7 years. In 2011, an IP claiming to be a zoo employee removed a huge amount of text as outdated. No doubt much more has outdated since then.

Misc edit

The lists of animals at the zoo is arbitrary (hundreds aren't listed) and unnecessary. Notable examples should be incorporated naturally into the prose and the lists removed.

De-listing edit

Since there has been no response or significant article work in two weeks, I will de-list the article. Feel free to request a fresh GA review through the normla process, or by contacting me directly, if the issues are addressed. --ThaddeusB (talk) 15:35, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
