Name of Article

edit

The Colorado Chautauqua is an organization (a 501c3 nonprofit called the Colorado Chautauqua Association), its buildings, and the activities carried on in and near those buildings. It is notable because it is one of only three Chautauquas that survive as of 2006. The CCA buildings are on 26 acres of land leased from the city of Boulder, Colorado.

Chautauqua Park is a city park in Boulder, Colorado. It is a pleasant park, but not particularly notable. Chautauqua Park's chief claim to fame is that it is part of the original grounds of The Colorado Chautauqua, even though it is not under the management of the Colorado Chautauqua Association. This 14-acre park is adjacent to the Colorado Chautauqua Association's leased land.

The National Historic Landmark includes both the 26 acres controlled by the Colorado Chautauqua Association and Chautauqua Park. For that reason the phrase "Colorado Chautauqua Park" appears in some official Landmark documents, but this unfortunate phrase is not the name of any entity that actually exists in Colorado.

For that reason the name of this article should be "Colorado Chautauqua" or "The Colorado Chautauqua". I have moved the article.

NRHP Rating of article

edit

For the NRHP perspective, I just down-rated the article from B status. Perhaps it should just be Stub status, but I only down-rated it one notch to Start status. It may be a B article in some overall sense, but for WP:NRHP it should include clear discussion of what is the area covered by NRHP and NHL designation (some of that is discussed in talk above, but it is not sourced and included in the article with references), contributing structures should be described, and the significance from the view of the landmarking bodies should be expressed. In particular, I anticipate that the historic cottages are contributing structures that are important to the NHL designation, yet they are not shown in pictures or much described in the article. These deficiencies could be addressed by adding to the article definitive information from the NRHP Inventory-Nomination document, and/or the NHL nomination document, together with accompanying pictures for this site. These documents and photos are available on-line at the National Park Service for most NHL sites NPS search for NHL/NRHP documents, and I have been linking such to many of the List of National Historic Landmarks in Colorado articles. But unfortunately they are not available on-line for this one. They can be requested and will be sent by postal mail. Hope this is helpful to those who would like to improve this article. doncram 18:25, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
