"Colonel Denning State Park is named in honor of William Denning who was, oddly, never a colonel."
So ... why did they name the park "Colonel Denning"? Does anyone know? -- 22:43, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
William Denning was a sergeant in the Colonial Army. I can only guess that as he aged the people in his community came to call him Colonel. This must have been to honor him. It is fairy common to honor people in Kentucky with the honorific of colonel. I have never heard of this happening in PA. Dincher 22:46, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- The park website says "It is also not known when or who added the "colonel" to Sergeant William Denning's name." Perhaps he was granted or claimed the title as a courtesy; perhaps it was just a mistake. -- ALoan (Talk) 22:47, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
