Representative image and definition of a coiled coil?

Hi, I replaced the image of 1VCS with one of a GCN4 leucine zipper, since 1VCS is not a coiled coil, but rather a 3-helix bundle. Coiled coils (as I understand the term) are composed of separate polypeptide chains. You can see more clearly that 1VCS is one polypeptide chain from the figure at the right. But it's possible that I'm mistaken about the definition; what do people here think? Willow 16:36, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

I just looked up the definition of coiled-coil in one of my textboks and it seems that the term is indeed primary used for structures with multiple polypeptide chains. In fact I didn't check of which PDB I create the image from, I just used the same PDB from the previous (rather crappy picture). I wish you would have updated the old picture (which has been there for ages) yesterday and not today, hours after I invest some time to make a new one which is obsolete now... --Splette ^Talk 16:58, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Splette, it's nice to meet another person interested in proteins! There's getting to be quite a few of us now, such as Opabinia regalis, Kjaergaard and Tim Vickers (to name those that I've met — I'm sure there are many more). I'm really sorry about my timing on the coiled coil image; I also had noticed the awful ribbon diagram there before, but didn't have the time to fix it until today. :( But I'm sure that I'll have the pleasure of appreciating many contributions from you in the future. Besides, in Wikipedia, nothing is ever truly lost and no effort is in vain. :) Willow 20:18, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Q: Conventions for capitalization of gene/protein names?

I wikified the terms c-Fos and c-jun - the first of which is the gene and is capitalized, the second of which is the protein which isn't capitalized. At least the wikipedia name isn't, and whose gene name (JUN) is all capitals.. Is there any agreed-upon conventions for such things? I seem to remember from a number of years ago that I saw something saying there was some kind of convention, but I forget now. Jimw338 (talk) 22:21, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
