So I have tried to tidy this up a bit, as a sort of in-between stage before disambiguation. I could find no source for any of these, so I have moved them to here for now:

  1. were used to summon well known Celtic oracles. Is this just a straight translation from the .de page?
  2. Its nearest English translation is "ballot stick" or "voting stick". Is it? My Welsh-English dictionary, Geiriadur Mawr, simply calls it "lot, ballot". For lots--well, four--English definitions, someone more qualified than I am might like to look at the definitions in the relevant Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru section (3.6M download available off this University of Wales page ). Two of them predate Iolo.
  3. They were traditionally freshly-cut twigs from many different trees, without any special distinguishing features. Today they are simple pieces of wood onto which the celtic Ogham alphabet is either burned or engraved. Weeeelll... there are indeed pictures on the web of pieces of wood onto which something was engraved (apparently there's one in my local museum), but is stuff from 1870 "today"? I left that out for now.

I only came here to add a note about the place, and I can't even remember what that note was now..
