Talk:Cochinchina campaign

Spanish participation edit

Why have a number of recent edits to this main article and its subsidiary articles unreasonably exaggerated Spanish participation in the campaign? My Tho was captured by the Spanish? I think not, at least if you look at the numbers involved. I normally use the word 'allied' where a reasonable number of Spanish troops were involved in a particular expedition, but where Spanish participation was only token I have sometimes used 'French' as a shorthand way of saying 'French plus a few Spanish'. Spanish participation in the campaign was modest, to use the politest word I can think of. They were very much junior partners to the French, particularly after they turned down a French request to contribute a contingent of cavalry from the Philippines garrison to the campaign. I've given the Spanish a whole sentence to themselves in the 'aftermath' section of this article, and that's being generous. To give them much more would be to distort the balance of events.

Spain offered a logistic support to France from the Spanish colony of the Philipines, which was the most important Western base in Asia until the XIX Century. (Portugueses and Dutch had small colonies until then, and France none)--83.35.180.29 (talk) 00:57, 28 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Judging by other wiki entries on the battles and the references to French historians, Spain made significant contributions to operations apart from logistical support. In all, it looks like a third of the manpower in battles was Spanish/Filipino. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.227.27.165 (talk) 02:47, 31 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Vietnamese accents edit

I am in the process of removing the intrusive Vietnamese accents added to Vietnamese place names in this article and its subsidiaries. This is an English-language dictionary, and place names (e.g. Bien Hoa, My Tho, Vinh Long, Ky Hoa) should appear in their normal English spelling, perhaps glossed once with the accented Vietnamese spelling. Apart from anything else, the use of Vietnamese accents makes these articles very difficult to access. I have opened a discussion on this issue on the discussion page for the style guide for Wikiproject Vietnam.
