Copyvio edit

I removed the first section, on the Coat of Arm used between 1964 and 1975. It was a copyvio from [1]. Pruneautalk 23:36, 26 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

dolphins or barracuda? edit

I was once told that the fish on the 64 to 75 COA where actually Barracuda not dolphins. I forget the heraldic explanation given. --195.158.70.127 16:30, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

The term used in heraldry and decorative arts is "dolphin". It is a stylized fish (not a stylized mammal). The picture on the page is pretty close to the usual form. (Although they are often depicted with the tail sticking up.) Perhaps the barracuda reference attempts to identify the actual species of fish upon which the heraldic dolphin is based. I always thought it looked more like a sea robin.Monomoit (talk) 22:43, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Flag or Arms -- Which came first? edit

The article mirrors the Maltese government Web site in stating that the coat of arms depicts the flag. There is some merit to this view, since the wording implies that the Maltese constitution specifies the flag, while the arms are ordained by a regular act of the parliament.

Historically, the influence is the other way round, and the page should probably reflect this. Even before the George Cross was added, the white-and-red arms were the main symbol of the government.

Before 1964, all references showed the conventional badge-on-ensign design for the Maltese flag. The [2] (Flag of Gibraltar) page illustrates what I am talking about. Given that Malta and Gibraltar had similar status before 1964, this page should probably contain something similar for pre-1964. Monomoit (talk) 22:43, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
